A coming of age novel from the perspective of a middle-aged artist who returns to Toronto and to the memories of her past. The power and beauty of Atwood's writing is remarkable as is the story she tells. There are so many connections and interconnections, and all of them are interwoven delicately and seamlessly.Unlike some successful authors, Atwood never repeats her ideas from one book to the next but each novel is a new journey in which you're always fully immersed in the lives of the characters. Cat's Eye is no different in this respect and I was completely absorbed from start to end.I particularly liked the depiction of the child's world as one in which you observe but can't quite intervene; how this moves into the teenage years when a quiet but cruel form of revenge is exacted in a precise and self-conscious way; the relationship with the narrator's brother is drawn through perfectly concise details, with just enough information provided but never too much. This reflects another impressive feature of the novel in that there's nothing redundant in this story. Everything has a reason to be there and Atwood's skill at this level is immense. She's a brilliant writer and Cat's Eye is simply further proof of this. To say I stand in awe of her abilities and the impact her work makes on my life is a vast understatement. She is, quite simply, brilliant.

This is a book for an older person. The protagonist is around age 50 and returns to the city where she grew up for a retrospective show of her paintings, which are all about her life and the people she knew. She is now walking down the streets she walked as a child and adolescent, and all her paintings are now hanging in one room. She is also staying in the art studio of her former husband. The story is a potent emotional voyage of the past and the undigested experiences she is dealing with, as well as her own aging body. My favorite part was her experience of being bullied as a child by her “friends,” and how she finally rose above that and found her personal power. For women in particular, it can take decades before we stop giving away our power, if ever. I was profoundly sad after reading this book, but it also served as a catharsis, as I realized that we are all haunted by our memories, miss the old friends who have left our life, struggle to forgive those who have abused and betrayed us, and continually mourn our loved ones who passed away. This is the true burden of aging: our memories.

Atwood has an uncanny ability to dwell in the shoes of the protagonist whether child, teen, or adult. In Cat's Eye, she inhabits all stages of life. The child Elaine is small for her age, inquisitive, and bullied. A The same classmates who befriended the new girl are the ones who make her feel worthless mentally, physically, and socially. She is actually very bright and creativeskipped a grade, found her artistic side, and acquired her own family. She met her tormentors again in adult life. This time the encounters were different. Big question: Does the bullied one become a bully?

Margaret Atwood has definitely written a book that will not soon be forgotten. Elaine, the main character, begins her life traveling in the back of a car, and living in remote Canadian locations while her father researches rare insects. She does not have meaningful interactions with others, besides her mother, father, and brother until she is approximately 9 years old. At that time, her family moves to Toronto and moves into her first permanent residence. She enters a school and befriends a few girls her age. Elaine's relationships with those girls appear ordinary and do not become extraordinary until a girl, Cordelia, joins Elaine at school. Cordelia teases, ridicules, and torments Elaine for numerous years until Elaine faces a near-death experience. From then on, Elaine manages restore confidence in herself and move away from Cordelia's influence. While the two girls resume their friendship in high school, the dynamic of their childhood friendship never returns and the balance of power even shifts, over time, so that it favors Elaine.Despite Elaine's success in art and love, she has never come to terms with her relationship with Cordelia. "Cat's Eye" follows Elaine's search for Cordelia and the path that Elaine follows as she tries to understand their "friendship."Elaine herself is a dark character, as she tends to have a solemn outlook on life and never seems to display happiness. Her pensive nature leads to interesting observations on the meaning of her art and how the avant garde work resulted from her early childhood experiences. Elaine's reflections also allow the reader to follow the interactions between Elaine's parents, brother, and herself; her introduction to religion; her first experiences with art; and her experiences with the opposite sex. While this book isn't easy to read, as Atwood writes in great detail and the pace of the book moves slowly, Elaine's reflections are interesting and the way she overcomes Cordelia's evil spell leads one to believe that good can prevail over evil.

Enjoyed this biography a lot. It is nice to see a dedicated family support one another through ups and downs. Mr. Galindo had much to deal with and his story is inspiring. Fifteen years have passed since it's writing but the story will still be of interest to anyone interested in the lives of famous figure skaters or anyone dealing with gay issues in their family.

Something about this book just isn't very satisfying. When I saw the name Eric Marcus attatched to the book I was excited because I remembered that he helped Greg Louganis produce an excellent book. However, Rudy's book leaves a lot to be desired. The sroty seemes to focus more on his skating. True, skating was a vital part of his life, but it seemes that's all there is. This book would have been better if more time was spent on the events that happened between competitions.

great book, glad to have it

Such an amazing book! Truly inspiring! Enjoyed reading every page of it!

Have always been a huge fan .........book was fantastic.......what a great read!!!!!

I grew up watching figure skating over the years, and was familiar with Rudy by name only. I didn't remember much about his performances and wondered why he never made it to the Olympics. This autobiography was a fantastic and heartbreaking look at what it takes to be a champion skater -- what it takes out of you, and what it demands of you. Galindo was never a quitter, though life tried to shut the door on his dreams many times. His passion for skating is inspiring and I couldn't wait to seek out YouTube videos of his skating after reading his story. Watching his 1996 Nationals performances brought me to tears, knowing how far he had come for that singular moment. The only thing possibly missing from this story is his sister Laura's perspective, since the biography covers so much of her life and her closeness with Rudy as well. But it is wholly Rudy's story to tell, and you cheer and cry along with him throughout. I was gutted to learn that he was diagnosed HIV+ in 2000, especially after reading the heartwrenching sections involving George's battle against AIDS, but it does make you realize how far we've come in medical advancements that Rudy's diagnosis is no longer the death sentence it was for George in the late 80's. If you enjoyed Christine Brennan's inside look at skating, you'll enjoy this biography as well.

Fans of Rudy Galindo and figure skating will enjoy this frank autobiography that leaves out nothing and gives a fascinating behind-the-scenes look into the fast-paced and sometimes heartless world of international skating. Rudy's working class family made major sacrifices to keep him in the sport, and the reader can't help but be moved. USFSA politics is exposed for what it is - they can and will scuttle a skater's career if s/he doesn't fit their "image" - and you'll shake your head yet again over the strange world of judging. Rudy tells it all, and the good news is that his career is far from over. Sequel, anyone?

Rudy Galindo's autobiography ICEBREAKER is wonderful. Rudy's honest and vivid descriptions of his feelings make the reader cry and cheer right along with him. This book is an inspiration to anyone who feels that he/she is different. It is such an example of how anyone can reach his/her goal against all odds if they will work hard enough and never, never give up. Rudy Galindo is a true champion in every way -- not just on the ice -- and this book shows that beautifully.

#319,657 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The story picks up not too long after the events of the first book. This time however, instead of Kaaro being the main POV character, it is his girlfriend and government agent Aminat. The makeshift town of Rosewater continues to grow in population as pilgrims from every corner of the world come to be healed of their ailments. The problem is the biodome at Rosewater's center seems to be dying ever so slowly, leaving their hopes of a reversal of their maladies very much in doubt. Added to the disorder of the growing masses and the decaying biodome is the specter of Rosewater's charismatic mayor Jack Jacques and his movement to declare independence for Rosewater. This understandably doesn't sit very well with the President of Nigeria, and a violent conflict is almost certain to arise between the two political forces. Meanwhile, a local woman named Alyssa awakens to find that she has no recollection of her husband and daughter. As a matter of fact she can't really remember much of anything at all. Why she can't remember her past is a mystery that she spends the majority of the story attempting to discover, eventually finding herself on the radar of the government's secret agency S45 and Aminat in particular. Could she somehow be connected with the strange alien Wormwood and the extra-terrestrial forces that reside within Rosewater's biodome? As that scenario plays out we are introduced to Eric, an unwilling minor employee of S45 who is basically ordered to assassinate the mayor of Rosewater Jack Jacques to put an end to his ambitious plans to break free from Nigerian government control. Eric really has no choice as his only other option is death at the hands of his employers. All of these various storylines alternate between chapters. Unlike Rosewater where the story was told almost exclusively through the eyes of Kaaro, THE ROSEWATER INSURRECTION tells the tale through numerous POV switching. As the story progresses, we definitely get a bigger background behind the alien entity at the heart of Rosewater and Wormwood has more of a center-stage role than in the previous book. The mystery of Wormwood's origin is hinted at, definitely tantalizing us for a potential huge reveal in the final book. As for Aminat and Kaaro, they are still very much in love, very much a powerful couple, and very much determined to get answers to what the aliens' plans are for Nigeria and the entirety of Earth.I've been living in Tade Thompson's Rosewater for the better part of a month and I have to say that I'm a little depressed that I don't have book three to pick up immediately. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait for that one a little while longer, but meanwhile, let me opine on the many virtues of THE ROSEWATER INSURRECTION. This book was almost night and day in style compared to the first one. I think I was a bit thrown off at first by the multiple POVs just because I was so used to Kaaro being the main character. After I became acclimated with it though, I just settled in and let the story take hold of me. There was so much going on in this story and it really served to clear up some nagging questions from the first book that were lingering in my mind. Jack Jacques and his independence movement is much more of a player in this one, as intimated by the INSURRECTION part of the title. I enjoyed reading the flashbacks in the story that showed how he essentially charmed his way from a small-time figure to a major political leader by connecting with the people of Rosewater on a very personal level. With regard to the characters, Aminat is one of the strongest female characters in any SF story that I have read. I was happy to see her get the majority of the spotlight in THE ROSEWATER INSURRECTION because I think that she is a very compelling and interesting character. It was gratifying to get to see some more of what she is all about. My only minor beef with this book was that the switching of POVs was a little distracting in the beginning and it took me a while to adjust from the first book. I think part of that had to do with the fact that I began this book the day after I finished the first one and I was used to that story structure. But other than that I believe that this was more than a solid follow up to Rosewater and it set up the last book in the series quite nicely. I really recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a unique, thought-provoking SF read that has deep, complex characters and an alien mystery that makes you keep turning the pages feverishly. A great second installment in the Wormwood Trilogy that makes me eager to get my hands on the final book. Read it now, you won't regret it.

Rating:★★★★+Starting this review off with thanks to Orbit and the author for an advanced reading copy of The Rosewater Insurrection (The Wormwood Trilogy #2) in exchange for an open and honest review. Receiving this ARC did not influence my thoughts or opinions on the novel. So, unfortunately, I did not get around to reviewing Book 1 of this trilogy as I read it during the holidays where life seemed to always get in the way of being in front of a computer. Nothing wrong with that, but I did not get to share my praise for Thompson’s SF debut. Rosewater was such an astounding and visceral read, and absolutely unlike anything I have ever read.Book 2 takes it to another level. With Kaaro taking a backseat this time around, we get to follow along in the boots of his lover, Aminat. She is tasked with finding and apprehending a woman who may be the key to the survival of not only the people of Rosewater, but the human race as a whole. The woman she is in charge of finding is Alyssa Sutcliffe, who has just woken up with .50 cal sized gaps in her memory, even doubting who she really is.Meanwhile, Rosewater is in complete turmoil as its mayor, Jack Jacques, has decided to piss of the Nigerian President by declaring independence, culminating in a massive amount of external resistance. Then, of course, you have the hidden conflict between the entity known as Wormwood and an evil that has stopped it dead in its tracks. While Thompson’s narrative style stays the same, non-linear with multiple POVs, the story is a little easier to follow this time around as there aren’t as many jumps back or forward in time. I know that was a small issue for me in Book 1, which lead to some rewinds and mental preparedness whenever I sat down to read.Much like in Book 1, the author has a knack for creating characters (whether or not you want to, or are supposed to, root for them is up for debate), but he really shines in his world-building. While The Wormwood Trilogy is built on the somewhat “small-scale”, this book feels epic in its execution. The addition of the xenosphere just adds an extra layer of originality and broadens the sandbox Thompson has to play in.The writing is exquisite; the prose tantalizing. You’ll be hooked from page one and by the time you are finished, you’ll be foaming at the mouth for Book 3. This is the future. It is what science fiction needs to be.
