Georgia Freedman is a freelance journalist and editor based in the Bay Area. Her writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Afar, Martha Stewart Living, Rodale's Organic Life, Roads and Kingdoms, and other food and travel publications including Saveur magazine, where she was previously the managing editor. Georgia has been traveling to China to learn about the country's food and culture since 2000, and she lived in Yunnan Province for two years. She returns to Yunnan regularly with her husband, Josh Wand, and their young daughter, and she shares stories about their travels at ChinaSouthoftheClouds.com.

From Tibetan Momos (dumplings) to spicy tropical dishes, the author gives us a glimpse into the culinary lives of a very rich and diverse region. Most of the recipients come from restaurants, but they retain the interest of each region. I’ve made many of the dishes, and am pleased with the results. I would caution that this is not an ideal text for someone who does not already understand the techniques and methods of Asian cooking, but it showcases a great palette of flavors and combinations, so is a worthy addition to ones library. Some ingredients may be hard to source, but alternatives are provided in most cases.

This book is a superb introduction to regional foods of Yunnan province. The recipes are uniformly fine and appetizing, the stories interesting and valuable. I have to say--I am not an envious man, but I envy Georgia Freedman--she got a chance to spend a couple of years exploring all the best foods and restaurants of the most beautiful, varied, and interesting part of China. The downside, mentioned by several reviewers, is that you can't always find key ingredients, and sometimes you can't even tell what they are--she often calls for "sawtooth herb" without explaining what it is. It is Eryngium foetidum, a Mexican plant known as "Tabasco parsley" in its homeland, that somehow got to southeast Asia and has become very popular there. You can usually find it in Vietnamese markets, but not in Chinese ones. I might also add that the winter squash there is close to our butternut. Yunnan food is amazingly influenced by New World food--traveling with some Mexican friends, at a conference, I watched their utter amazement at a rather remote Sani (minority) village with adobe houses, corn ears drying in trees, strings of dried chiles and Mexican green beans hanging from the roof, and Mexican squash piled up under the eaves--it was exactly like a Mexican farmstead! Such is the "Columbian exchange."

I just received "Cooking South of the Clouds" recently and it is a really well put together book with beautiful pictures and some great looking recipes. I honestly haven't cooked anything with it just yet since I haven't gone grocery shopping yet lol.While leafing through the book I noticed one thing that probably needs to be made more clear on the "black cardamom" stated on page 14, especially since this ingredient is listed as a pantry staple.In the picture to the left of the description on page 14, it looks very different from the (Indian) black cardamom I have in my pantry. Did a little research and found that the ingredient that needs to be used is different. It has quite a few names, here are a couple that could be searched to get you what's needed for the recipes. - Red Cardamom - "Cao Guo" or "tsaoko" which is the Mandarin name for it, roughly translates into "grass fruit"** you can do a quick search for the following in a single line to confirm what I'm saying by looking at the 1st ingredient on "Egg Wan's Food Odyssey" page and compare the Chinese characters ;) "14 essential chinese spices" "eggwansfoododyssey"And for those that want to substitute in (Indian) black cardamom, from a site I found it states "Red Cardamom is related to, but highly distinctive from, green cardamom and Indian black cardamom-it should not be used as a substitute for either of these spices."Didn't mean to go on and on about one ingredient but I wanted to make sure all of us end up making the correct dish because if you bought the book like I did, you're probably looking to attempt re-create authentic traditional dishes at home. Without ever having tasted these dishes before we have to rely on accurate recipes so although using the name "black cardamom" wasn't technically wrong (since I found site calling it "Chinese black cardamom") I have to deduct 1 star due to the lack of distinction between 2 very different ingredients that may completely change the taste of a dish. Otherwise, great looking book. Now I need to get off my *ss to go shopping and then start cooking :)

I have an almost embarrassingly large collection of internationally-focused cookery books and vowed to not buy another for a year, but ... sigh ... yes, I was too tempted, so bought this one and ... okay ... I'm glad that I did! The book is beautifully written with clear, precise directions for obtaining and using some uncommon ingredients. And the photography is stunning. I also wanted a book that explores and incorporates cultural information. Yunnan Province is home to many of China's "ethnic minorities", and this cookery book offers abundant cultural insights which only add to the delight of each recipe. There are, of course, regional variations in some of the recipes. Having spent some months in the Himalayas, I think my recipes for meat and vegetable momos could have more depth of flavor, but then I haven't tried the simpler, Northern Yunnan version. But now I will! I recommend this book to you for the sheer joy of it.

I love cooking, world travel and culture, and photography, and this book is a treasured addition to my library in all three categories. Cooking South of the Clouds-Recipes and Stories from China's Yunnan Province is true to its title. This is not just a cookbook. The stories about the region, the local cooks, and the culture of the ethnic minorities who inhabit the province are fascinating, and the beautiful photographs throughout the book, not only of the food, but of the scenery and most importantly, the people, provide a wonderful context to the recipes and the understanding of the region. The recipes themselves are varied and enticing, and the author provides tips if some of the ingredients are unavailable,or a vegetarian version is preferred. There is a section describing cooking tools, and I learned how to build a Yunnan meal! The cover is beautiful, and makes this a great coffee table book as well.

The Rose & the Dagger, the sequel to Renée Ahdieh’s phenomenal debut The Wrath & the Dawn, brings Shahrzad’s story to a close. In the first book, Shahrzad was determined to avenge her best friend and the countless other young women killed by the ruthless Khalid Ibn al-Rashid, the Caliph of Khorasan. All she had to do was kill the monster. But Shahrzad never expected to find that underneath the leader’s cruel mask was a lonely young man, burdened with an inescapable curse. Instead of revenge, she did the unspeakable, she fell in love. But the world around the two young lovers still burned with hatred and those directly affected by the Caliph’s actions rallied in retaliation. Forced back into the arms of those who hate her husband, Shahrzad must find a way to stop a war that seems inevitable and free Khalid from the curse that threatens to separate them for good.Renée Ahdieh once again shows what a fantastic writer she is, combining complex characters with a compelling storyline and stunning setting. In the first book, readers’ insight into Khalid was limited to Shahzrad’s point of view and while this helped in the mystery surrounding the enigmatic leader, I wanted a better understanding of his character. This sequel offers just that. After the city of Rey is nearly destroyed, Khalid refuses to abandon his people, despite knowing they all view him as a monster. He knows that Shahrzad is safer away from him and elects not to go after her, sacrificing the one person who may have given him peace. Though in many ways standoffish, Khalid shows an ability to overcome his former animosity towards certain other characters, but at the same time still holding others to a high standard of honor.Shahrzad’s determined nature is a force to be reckoned with. From the very beginning, she’s demanded to be heard and respected. She knows what she wants and can’t be dissuaded from pursuing what she believes is right. Though she has come to love Khalid, she never wavers in her loyalty to her sister and her hope for her father. Although I really wanted to see Khalid open up more to his cousin Jalal, Shahrzad’s relationship with her sister Irsa is held in direct contrast. Their mutual openness isn’t always easy, but their connection with one another makes them instantly more relatable. As the first book is mainly focused on the growing relationship between Shahrzad and Khalid, we hardly ever got to see them apart. This concluding novel gives both characters a chance to shine as each begins to forge their own path.There are several minor characters that I wished we could have learned more about. Most notable is Artan Temujin. Shahrzad meets him through a mutual friend and though he is tasked with teaching her how to hone her own magical abilities, it is his connections that give her hope that Khalid’s curse can be broken. I loved that he challenges Shahrzad, but his own story is left largely untold and his personality is so big, I expected the author to develop him more. Tariq, Shahrzad’s former suitor, spent most of the last book playing the part of a man scorned by his first love and bent on taking revenge on the man he thinks has stolen her. I immediately felt that Tariq had so much more potential and wanted to see him grow as a character. I was extremely happy to see where Ahdieh chose to take his storyline.Renée Ahdieh’s series makes an excellent case for duologies and love stories that don’t involve love-triangles. There are some elements I wished had been explored more, mainly Shahrzad’s own magical gift and magic’s larger role in this universe. Still, not enough can be said for Ahdieh’s ability to write such an irresistible, steadfast, and moving romance.

The “Rose and the dagger” is a continuation of the “Wrath and the dawn” a story about Khalid, a cursed man and Shahrzad, the woman who loves him. In this novel Shahrzad must find a way to break Khalid’s curse, and stop an impending war in order to find her way back to her one true love.Overall this conclusion was beautifully written and satisfying. It feels different than the first installment because even though it is centered on Shahrzad and Khalid’s love it dwells more on the forces trying to tear them apart. This shifts caused the story to be more than just a romantic tale.There are many new perspectives in this installment including Irsa, Rahim, and Omar. Adding these new perspectives gives the viewer a larger scope of the world revealing what’s happening in other places at the same time. It also makes certain events even more heart-breaking because we tend to dwell in the minds of characters when their emotions are heightened.This is a great sequel because it truly shows how much Khalid and Shahrzad care for each other and the world that surrounds them. I would highly recommend picking up this series. It is a romantic and easy read that will have you feeling a variety of emotions some of them conflicting. Also it offers up a new world with unique rules and characters that are flawed and beautifully constructed making them feel tangible. If you pick up this series, you won’t regret it.

The Rose & the Dagger was one of my most anticipated reads of 2016. I loved the first book and its sumptuous storytelling and heart-pounding romance. I was hoping both would continue into the sequel, but sadly, they didn't.The Wrath & the Dawn wasn't perfectly plotted, but it really didn't matter, because the romance and character development really took center stage. Unfortunately, the weak plot became more apparent in Rose, which felt like it was dragged out for far too long. The least interesting parts of Wrath (the war, Shazi's father, Tariq's resentment toward the Caliph) were the major thrust in this book, and none of it held my interest.Even the relationship between Shazi and Khalid felt lackluster. They had one really great scene that was full of tension, but after that, there was no spark.The brightest point of the book was Shazi's sister Irsa, but (view spoiler) I'll admit that I would LOVE a spinoff about her. She's a fascinating character.Overall, I wanted a lot more from this. I think Renee is a great writer, but I never connected with this book. I almost wish Wrath had been a longer standalone. This sequel felt like too much book for not enough story.

I have read a great number of his books over the years but I had not read this particular collection (The collected short stories of Louis L’Amour Volume 3 Frontier stories, 560 pages) and when I saw it on Amazon for a bargain price I purchased it.This collection has 28 short stories and I really enjoyed reading these action packed stories which were interesting and enjoyable. I purchased this book for my husband. He has read the majority of western in excistance and loves Louis L'Amour. He says he enjoys these because he can sit down and read every evening and have a reason to stop at a reasonable hour. If you are a avid reader you understand that once you start a good book you just can't stop reading until the end. With these he reads a few short stories and calls it good. He has started paraphrasing the stories to our sons 4 and 6 and they are also enjoying these books. He says it is almost always the same story line, but the details are what makes it so interesting.

I like the short stories. Every one is difficult to put down. You can't go wrong with this book. It can easily be read more than once.

There are not enough words to express the genius of Louis L'Amour. He is just the best and I've rest all the books and most of the short stories.
