I am an adult learner who started from ground 0 in piano (and music education) in April of this year (2016). The book I chose to start with was the Alfred Adult All-In-One course Book One. I was really motivated and got to around page 90 of that book in about 3 weeks time. I guess I was trying too hard, my left hand started to hurt. I had to completely stop playing to rest my hand for about 2 weeks. I stopped learning from that book after that, plus I really didn't like the songs in that book. But by then, I had enough of the very basics to be able to learn to play some of the songs in Burgmuller Twenty Five Easy and Progressive Studies. For theories, I studied The Complete Book of Scale, Chords..... I even practiced using the Hanon book. I learned to play the complete Fur Elise (all three sections) to a fairly OK level. All seemed to go OK, until I came upon this new song. I heard on the radio and found the sheet for it. I spent 3 days on it and could not get past the first half page, I was literally mapping out each note to the fingers and was going note by note, finger by finger. Luckily, I came upon this brilliant young concert pianist Yuja Wang. She plays over 100 concerts every year all over the world and there are many clips of her amazing playing on youtube. In one of her interviews, she mentioned it usually takes her 3 days to learn a new concert piece, the kind that lasts 20, 30, 40 minutes. A light bulb went off in my head, she must not be learning it note by note, finger by finger. Long story short, in China, learning to play the piano is very popular. The serious students go through a very thorough training program that usually starts around age 6. The Czerny books are very much part of that regime. It is said if one masters Czerny book 599, followed by books 849 and then 299, that puts the person in the mid level of piano playing. While I will continue to search for more materials to supplement the three Czerny books, I know I am on the right path now. I needed to get through the past 8 months to be where I am today, I consider that pre-learning. The real learning starts with this book. In case anyone is interested, there are complete sets of training video on youtube for this book.

Book was amazing the études were more difficult than I was expecting and therefore provided a fun challenge. I gave the product four stars because of the constant problem with piano books not wanting to stay open. If I were to give it an rcm grade I would say probably a grade 2-4 so the pieces aren't terribly hard for relatively experienced pianists.

I like Czerny because his exercises have more musical value than say Hanon. Sometimes I play them just because they sound nice!

Excellent foundation book for beginner pianists

This is a classic. I bought it to refresh my skills. It is a very logical and efficient method.

These are a series of progressively difficult musical exercises. More challenging that scales and arpeggios. A must for someone who wants to really improve their piano skills. Because of the size of the notes and staff I'd not recommend this for younger children - I get the impression adults are the target audience here.

Love Love Love!

This is a great book for mastering the fundamentals of piano technique. My only disappointment is that at least 33% of the book is in the key of C. I would have liked to see a more in-depth representation of other keys.

About the Author

Guadalupe Ortiz completed her PhD in Computer Science at the University of Extremadura (Spain) in 2007. Since graduating in 2001 and for the following eight years, she worked as an Assistant Professor as well as a research engineer at the University of Extremadura's Computer Science Department. In 2009 she joined the University of Cádiz as Professor in the Department of Computer Science. She has published numerous peer-reviewed papers in international journals, workshops and conferences. She has been a member of various programme and organization committees of scientific workshops and conferences over the last years and acts as a reviewer for several journals. Her research interests embrace aspect-oriented techniques as a way to improve Web service development in various fields, with an emphasis on model-driven extra-functional properties and quality of service, as well as service context-awareness and their adaptation to mobile devices. Javier Cubo completed his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Málaga (Spain) in 2010. He has worked both in academia and industry, including The State University of New York (SUNY) (2002-2003), Andalusian Centre of Innovation, Information Technology, and Communications (CITIC) (2004-2006), and Department of Computer Science of University of Málaga (2003, 2006-onwards - as research associate). He has been awarded with two grants: Researcher "Torres Quevedo" Program, Science and Innovation Spanish Ministry and European social Fund (2004-2006), and PhD student - Doctoral Fellowship, Science and Innovation Spanish Ministry (2006-2010), while he has worked collaborating in teaching tasks. His research is focused on the development of formal models in software engineering, specifically in the paradigms of service-oriented computing, cloud computing and component-based software development, applied to context-aware and self-adaptive systems, service composition and reusing in mobile and pervasive systems, and dynamic reconfiguration. He has participated in numerous research projects (national, and international, such as NSF and FP7) and conferences, has published in journals and international workshops and conferences, and has been member of PC and OC, as well as reviewer of several scientific workshops and conferences over the last years.

This is one of the most beautiful of all the machine embroidery books i have read. (And I have more art/fine craft books that wall to wall to ceiling bookshelves have invaded every room in our home. The formal dining room is now a library. Honestly, how many times a year do you use the dining room when the kitchen table/breakfast nook is nearby? My studio is so full of books, there’s hardly have room to store supplies!)Her work is simple, but when finished it’s nearly photo realistic of gorgeous pieces of foliage and underwater wonders. As a fellow SCUBA diver but horrific photographer, I am so grateful she is able to transform those intricate corals and all the other wonders for us to enjoy topside. Her work is truly exquisite.And for those of you that want a technique learning book, she gives step by step instructions in how to do these yourself! Quite frankly, I was willing to keep this book in the “Visual Candy” section alone, so it’s like getting 2 books in one! I cannot wait until she gets old enough that people start doing Artist’s Retrospectives. I can imagine them to be some of the finest.This is an absolutely must buy for anyone who does hand guided machine embroidery or quilting. And many doing electronic machine embroidery would enjoy this is as well as hand embroiders who have been curious what could be done with that old machine of mom’s or grandma stored somewhere. To tell the truth, one of my favorite sewing machines ever was an old, all metal Kenmore with less than 5 stitches and weighed 30 pounds! Not a piece plastic anywhere, even the housing was metal. And there are many that sew avidly as a hobby or professionally that will admit to having an old all metal machine for heavy lifting.My only disappointment was it was not hand embroidered as that’s what I’m focused on this month :) She machine embroiders with such exactness, there are not the telltale loose ‘coloring outside the line’ that is generally associated with machine embroidery that it appears from a few feet away as a very tight satin stitching. It may be a simple process, but it is going to take a lot of work to gain her singular precision. This book is a treasure.

I've always loved Meredith's work. I also do free motion embroidery as one of my techniques... but there's just something about hers that really pulls me in!When I found out she made a book, I jumped on it. I'm so glad I did! It's BEAUTIFUL!I was expecting a "coffee table" book, which it is... but it's so much more! It's also an instructional book.I just love it!

This is a beautiful and informative book! Meredith Woolnough shares her artist creativity in rich detailed photographs and clear, easily understood instructions! As you read through the book, you become aware of how thoroughly she has explored using thread and a sewing machine to create beautiful pieces! Tons of good tips and advice! This has become one of my favorite books on sewing machine embroidery!

I LOVED this book. It's a unique form of embroidery and I felt the advice and info she provided were extremely helpful. Lots of colorful pictures throughout the book.

Great book. She takes you through all the processes used to create these amazong works of art. She also gives you the information needed to try it yourself. The photography is great as well.

Very detailed and informative book. I have been doing this type of machine embroidery for about a year already, and this book showed me some techniques to make it easier. Highly recommend for people who love to work with sewing machines and do free motion quilting
