helpful. thank you. but we are so far away from feeling as though there has been any one person or thing that has looked out for any of our best interest. all I can say is that we have found it rather odd that we have survived this thus far. our "dol" was last November and we still have no relief even though we had the best possible coverage only it was with farmers. if I could do any one thing from all of this, is that I would educate everyone as to what to expect if they should ever lose their home to a fire. because what you lose is really life as you know it. even if that is only temporary.

I lost my house in California Wildfire...a total loss!!! How can you remember all the items you had after living in my home for 44 years! This book was a lifesaver!! It stated items I forgot about. It explained how to do things and what to expect from insurance companies. This entire experience is soooo stressful and emotional....losing EVERYTHING! This book is excellent. It was suggested to me to buy it at the Sonoma County Recovery Center. I am so glad I listened to them! I highly recommend this book for anyone going through a disaster.

My mom lost her home to a fire this past summer. This book is extremely helpful in preparing a home inventory after the fact. It explains insurance procedures and offers sound advice. It's a thin, readable volume, which is perfect--a thick book would've been overwhelming during the first few months. I ordered the book within days of the fire. If you know someone going through this, get them this book.

I have not used it a much as I thought I would but it is a good reference.

Very helpful.

Excellent guide for anyone who is faced with a household disaster. I searched and searched for something to point me in the right direct after my house fire and this was the only helpful book I found. I bought a few extra copies and unfortunately, I've given all my extra's out to other families who were faced with a similar tragedy. It helped me tremendously with the complete list of inventory pages, which helped me itemize everything in my home after the fire. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

I have lots of neighbors who used this book, and found it very helpful. Worth every penny. I keep recommending it to people, and everyone who gets one thanks me!

This reads almost like notes for several books instead of a one cohesive one: the aphorism are pithy and, indeed, pessimistic, but not early as clear as the aphorists that Thacker lists in his hagiographies of pessimism. Furthermore, some of them are clever at the first read but not particularly insightful after a few, which is someone one wants from darker aphorists. I kept wondering, despite liking Thacker's more systemic (or maybe, complete), works, why I wasn't just reading Schopenhauer, Cioran, Leopardi, Lichtenberg, or Nietzsche directly. The hagiographies are interesting, although they are wildly varied in-completeness and insight.

I dont know want to do this.

I'm not a philosophy student (rather, I studied in the sciences) so I don't have the background in Kant, Nietzsche, Kafka or other philosophic authors to compare this from a literary context. If you read this straight through, you'll find the author's ability to bring you into a "nice depression" is impeccable. The depression hit me like a ton of bricks. Can this, a self-hindrance book (which is, of course, the opposite of a self-help book) bring a new perspective on things? It lowers the volume on the positive aspects of life, no matter how superficial those positive aspects are to you. Is that useful? I don't know. I had to put the book down several times since I didn't want to put myself into the black hole that the author is in. But it's hard not to go there, at least in the first section of the book. One star deducted because a lot of the first section of the book uses quotations from other pessimistic (misanthropic + nihilistic) philosophers, so the author could have tried a little harder to make some original thought. Despite the horrendous depression it brings, it'd be 5-Star work, since it's definitely clear that this is otherwise a work of literary art. This is the first - and likely the last - self-hindrance / misanthropy tome I'll purchase for my personal library. I'm satisfied living in my bubble of happiness and reading books on being positive and having authors deliver manufactured self-encouragement. I'm OK with that. I'm probably not alone, since this is why authors from Napoleon Hill to Seth Godin (and yes, even Anthony Robbins) do so well commercially. The author is probably not (in his lifetime at least) going to see that same commercial success from this type of work. That said, it doesn't mean you shouldn't read it - again, it's literary art. Not to sound trite, but there used to be a skit on Saturday Night Live called "Debbie Downer" (I'm sure YouTube will provide great reference there). The author is an authentic, real-life version of that fictional character.

This guy is a "professor of philosophy" at the New School? Well then, I must be J.S. Bach. Page after page of insight-free, witless, stream of consciousness (as in unrefined fart stream of consciousness) sixth-grade aphorisms which amount to less than nothing. Three hundred pages of this drivel doesn't amount to one subordinate clause from Schopenhauer's least inspired sentence. I would suggest not wasting your time or money. To understate the matter.

Readable, but I really enjoyed Eugene Thacker's cosmic horror trilogy better.I found the structure of quotes, aphorisms and journal entries to be mildly irritating. The author's personal misanthropy comes off as affected, like the middle school kid that wears all black to prove he's burdened by his profound thoughts.

If you're looking for a good book to curl up with on a rainy day, you couldn't do much better than this treatise on pessimism.

I'm a mom with a family of boys. We have all the Chester Comix books on the Civil War, including "Reconstruction Junction."I do not recommend this book.Chapter One sets the scene well, but the book does not continue well.Chapter Two shows a comical, clownlike KKK, a club of veterans raising money and playing banjoes and wearing comical costumes. In a 24-page book for kids about Reconstruction, we don't need 2 pages that are the "Hogan's Heroes" version of the dopey, clowny, down-homey Hee-Haw Klan. In speaking of the "Birth of a Nation" movie, Bentley Boyd leaves out all mention of President Woodrow Wilson's demonstrated racist affinity for the Klan and resegregation policies disastrous for Blacks, but instead smears Warren Harding with a "rumor" that was inducted into the Klan as president. Bad history.Chapter Three gives us six pages of George Washington Carver. Too much. And falsely tarring Booker T. Washington with a "separate but equal" brush? Bad history.Chapter Four on the railroads is worth reading.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was a casual boxing fan back in the 70s and 80s...and, like many others, Ray Mancini captured my interest and made me a fan. His style was great to watch, and you never doubted that he was giving it everything he had. He may not have been on any "pound-for-pound" lists of the greatest boxers, but he sure should have been for entertainment value.The behind-the-scenes story of his life...and that of Duk Koo Kim's...is wonderfully told by Mark Kriegel. It's uplifting...touching...at times sad...and always poignant. I think it's a wonderful read about the connected stories of a son who would've done anything to please his father....and the marginalized kid (Kim) who stood so tall in his moment of truth.

I was a big fan of Ray's when I was a young kid. His losses broke my heart. I always hated Bramble, and it was fascinating to read that Bramble actually wasn't a bad guy. There are other great details about the other fighters as well. The book is obviously written by a friend of Ray's, but there are a lot of truthful details about Ray- not all flattering. Not surprisingly, Ray was man enough to take ownership of his mistakes and move on. If you are a big Ray fan like me, take a few nights to read this well-written book.

I live for books like this. Highs, lows and everything in between. The Good Son paints a picture that life isn't pretty, and that all we can do is fight through it. Read this book.

Good fast read with all the facts, a little color thrown in and more details than you probably need. Overall Mancini had alot of heart as a fighter and took advantage of his looks and connections to carve out a good life for himself. Good family background info. Dosn't really have the in depth boxing scenes like you want if you are a fight fan, but it gets the job done in a plodding sort of way.

Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, a lightweight boxing champion, was one of the most popular athletes in the early 1980s. Mancini was driven to win a boxing title, something his father, Lenny, a lightweight contender, never had an opportunity to do. World War II interrupted his father's promising career.Mancini, from Youngstown, Ohio, turned pro at age 18. Although he never had a surplus of talent, his greatest assets were his unmatched work ethic, his intense desire and his refusal to back up. When he defeated Jorge Morales in May of 1981 on CBS, a star was born. Ray was the son everyone wanted to have and his father-son story resonated with viewers.Although he only had 20 pro fights at age 20, he got a WBC title fight against the seasoned Alexis Arguello (72-5). Arguello KO'd him in the 14th round. Undeterred, Mancini went after Arturo Frias, the WBA lightweight champ. When Mancini defeated Frias for the title at age 21, the New York Times wrote, "Mancini has the ebullient boy-next-door personality and exciting non-stop punching style to be a superstar."Mancini's fight against Duk Koo Kim, an Asian and Pacific lightweight champ, in November 1982, however, would change everything. Kim, like Mancini, refused to take a step back and was willing to take a beating. Prior to the fight, Kim said, "One of us will die." Unfortunately, Kim did die as the result of the beating by Mancini.In the 13th round, Mancini delivered 44 consecutive punches; Kim grabbed him and after they were separated, Mancini pounded him with 17 more punches. The fight was called 19 seconds into the 14th round.After Kim's death, Mancini's marketability plummeted and a national debate raged about abolishing boxing. After the fight, Mancini was changed in every way--physically, emotionally and mentally. He was called a murderer by many people. He tried to deal with Kim's death, but he never seemed to be able to cope with it. Mancini seemingly lost his desire after Kim's death and his heart wasn't in the sport anymore.After losing to Livingston Bramble, Mancini announced his retirement in 1983 with a 29-3 record to go into acting. He came out of retirement in 1985 and lost to Hector Camacho, and again in 1989 when he lost to Greg Haugen. Author Mark Kriegel chronicles Mancini's life after his boxing career with his wife and three kids.One of the special parts of the book is the background on Duk Koo Kim, his wife and the aftermath and consequences of Kim's death on his family and his country. Eventually, Mancini was able to meet Kim's son, who was born after his death, and Kim's wife. It was a touching meeting where they were able to share their love, understanding and respect for Kim and each other.Although this book lacks the depth of Kriegel's previous biographies on Peter Maravich and Joe Namath, it is still an excellent biography.

I bought this book because, through many arcane marriages, I am a step cousin of a branch of the Goldsteins (aka Bernhards, they, too, changed their names). There was always a lot of talk about their cousin, Harriet. It's not often one has the chance to read about someone whose name was bandied about frequently and whom I met once. Even my 93 year old mother who has a hard time remembering what day it is knew exactly who I was talking about when I told her about the book.So, it was a shock to find out someone who was mentioned in only the most glowing terms and who was most gracious to me during our very brief meeting might not be the paragon I was always told she was. I must admit to a bit of schadenfreude: certainly there was no one in my family who had achieved anywhere near the heights I was told she had and I would have loved to counter with someone. I was of an age and so dazzled by anyone connected to the movies she could have sucked me in with very little effort, but I was of little interest to her. While this review is more about me than the book, I don't think I could offer objective review. But, god, the memories it brought back.

In a memoir, the author's most personal thoughts and recollections are on offer and the result can be very difficult to read. This seems true with Michael Frank's "The Mighty Franks: A Memoir". But what is difficult to read must have been excruciating to actually live through. Frank grew up in Los Angeles in a family so marked by the malevolence of one family member, his aunt Harriet Frank, Jr, whose lifetime of narcissistic behavior terrorised the family for sixty years. Michael Frank doesn't use the word "narcissist" to describe his aunt, but her behavior mimics the narcisstic behavior of several people I know. If you read the book, you may use a different term to describe "Hanky", depending on your experience with such a malevolent person.Michael Frank's aunt and uncle are real people, who have Wikipedia entries. His uncle, Irving Ravetch, and his aunt, Harriet Frank, Jr,(known as "Hanky") were noted screenwriters in the 1950's to 1980's. They worked primarily with director Martin Ritt. (You should read their Wiki entries before reading the book.) Michael was their nephew - a double nephew, at that, because his mother was Irving Ravetch's sister and his father was Harriet Frank's brother. A cozy combination which made for a cozy family unit, whose members lived a few blocks from each other in the Hollywood hills. To make matters even cozier, the two grandmothers shared an apartment after their respective husbands died. Both couples lived in and out of the other's homes, and the Frank's three sons were thought of a surrogate sons for Irving and Hanky, who had no children. However, the Ravetch's, particularly Hanky, seemed to prefer young Michael to his brothers, and, indeed, to anyone other than her husband. She was the "Auntie Mame" to his Patrick and showered him with gifts and attention. But the attention was that of his place in Hanky's world. She was the sun, he was planet circling. He finally rebelled in his late teens but by then Hanky's malevolence to him and the rest of the family continued unabated.Michael Frank's memoir begins when he was a child and continued up through Irving's death in 2010 and to Hanky's continued existence. He spares little of the "true" Hanky Ravetch and her wretched influence in his book. It's a fascinating book, as memoirs often are.

This book was slow-going for me at first, but then it picked up and the deeper it went into Harriet Frank, Jr.'s completely twisted personality, the more it gripped me. This woman was a study in self-absorption and terror plus an enormous need for power over others and control! And all of these traits were simply abided by her very tolerant husband. I could not get over him! Her adoration of her one nephew (out of three) was definitely pathological and destructive to him, but she could or would not recognize that. Childless herself, she grabbed onto this boy ferociously and way beyond what was normal. She rendered his poor parents almost powerless. She was definitely a force! The outcome for him is worth reading the book to find out. And she lived to be 100!

This memoir beautifully captures the seductive yet also destructive relationship that Frank had with his childless aunt, a powerful force in his upbringing who essentially steamrollered his parents into letting her mold him into her acolyte. His aunt was also that rarity then and now, a successful and powerful female Hollywood screenwriter. The book's glimpse into her work world isn't very deep, but satisfying nonetheless. Where Frank's aunt's behavior is concerned, he doesn't use the word "narcissist," but the concept haunts every page, and is especially evident in the final chapters of his aunt's life, after she loses her health, husband, and vitality. Then, without batting an eyelash, she turns her exploitative and exhibitionistic energy to other areas, revealing that essential shallowness of personal engagement so typical of someone with her condition. My only issue with the book, and it is a minor one, is that Frank himself at times feels insubstantial, at least in his portrait of himself as adult. But overall this is an important book for the portrait it paints of an unusual woman and the triangle she created between herself, a young boy, and his family.

I was given an original version of this book in 1992 and told to pray the prayer for Healing for my husband who had been having seizures for 3 days and were not stopping. Doctors advised that something better change quickly or else! Personally at the time I didn't even know God or how to pray but the giver of this book told me that God would hear my prayer anyway because "His word accomplishes what it is sent to do and does not return to Him void." She said I could trust on her faith if I didn't have enough of my own. I did as I was told and the next morning my husband was coherent and had no more seizures ever again. He was healed. Yes, he takes medicine but I fully believe he was healed. Our lives were forever changed! I was convinced that God was who He said He is and who my friend said He is...I devoted my life to God and accepted Christ as my Saviur and was filled with the Holy Spirit shortly after that time. I have gifted this book from the first version to every new version to this current Anniversary Edition literally 100's of them. I hope and pray that the seeds sown in to the lives of others thru the witness of God answering their prayers brings each recipient closer to God and to receiving their salvation thru Jesus Christ. My family, friends, and I have been blessed beyond measure in giving and receiving this powerful book. It led me to want more and find Christ for myself and want to serve and please Him. In obedience to Him and the promptings of the Holy Spirit I give this book out as soon a I feel led. I always keep them on hand. Other than the Holy Bible this is the best book of my lifetime because it leads you in to praying the Word of God. I still use it daily!

I already owned this book of prayers for several years! Everytime I've shared it with others, they are encouraged by the Words of Scripture in all the prayers in this book! I shared it recently with a few ladies at a prayer meeting. One of the ladies was so impressed with it that she ordered books for herself and also for the other women at the prayer meeting. At a later date, on a walking trip, I needed to rest while the other ladies continued to walk. One of these women had her prayer book with her in her backpack and offered to let me read it while they continued to walk, as I had left my prayer book in my car. While reading her book, I noticed how the scriptures are now listed in the back of the newer edition of the prayer books. So when I returned home, I ordered a newer version for myself and also one as a gift for someone else. I now carry my older prayer book with me in my purse and keep the newer version at home to study with. I have several prayer books. I love this prayer book the most. It is one great prayer book quoting scripture after scripture!

This book is like a trip through IKEA. You need one little thing, but once you find it, you realize its taken you two hours to find what you're looking for and now it's going to take you that long to get to the exit. And you have to plow through even more floors full of crap you were never interested in to begin with. Only this is worse, because you are trapped in the massive building with people you don't want to have anything to do with. It's not worth the trip. Don't even start.

I never give up on a book.....until this one came along, that is. According to the synopsis, this sounded like a good story idea. For the life of me, I can't imagine this one being a best seller. I guess I am not the only one who reads a synopsis and thinks the book is bound to be good. Well, believe me, from now on, I will read the sample before I buy the book. Just a bunch of chopped up phrases, that don't even make sense. I guess there is still hope for me writing a best seller. I believe even I could do a better job; after all, I am only 88 so I guess there is still hope. I will just get some of my good friends to write a glorified synopsis for me and WHOOPIEE!!! I might even get a Puliizer Prize.

It's a sad commentary on the state of contemporary fiction when a book this bad is not only a best seller, but an acclaimed one. It starts off well, but quickly becomes boring, and its two "shocking revelations" are obvious from the beginning. Finn is a completely inept writer (his use of language is hilariously bad), and I find myself truly angry that I spent $13.99 for his execrable work.

I was not a fan of this book. An alcoholic pill popper who somewhow, while online, always said and did the right thing, but in real life was a mess. A lame twist at the end finished the book quickly and made no sense. The middle of the book dragged. I am not hard to please with books but this just didn't do it for me.

This is a dark, atmospheric thriller that in the first 40% of the book had me completely captivated. Anna Fox is absolutely fascinating and rather humorous. She is unreliable and she is, of course, an alcoholic. You can’t have a psychological thriller these days with a sober person, can you? It would certainly break formula, but I digress.The reason this book ended up being 3.5 stars for me is because it is simply too long. The first 40% or so, I was completely enraptured, couldn’t put the book down and invested on the development. Then things sllllloooooowwwwwed waaaaaayyyyyy dooowwwwwwnnnnn. There was a lot in there, but this book could have easily been 100 pages less and still told the same story. The ending picked up and some of the twists definitely got me.I can see why this book has generated such buzz and is already being talked about as the “It” read for 2018. But for me, it dragged too much for it to be a stand out thriller. This is the type of story that doesn’t need filler pages, you can just tell it from start to finish and give me the 1 – 2 punch.I would recommend this book, as I mentioned, it is sure to be highly buzzed about, so I recommend you give it a go and see what you think. Maybe it is just me who thought it was too long

This book was dissappointing, considering how much hype it has generated. It seemed to be following the way Girl on the Train was written, but never got going for me. I ouind the repetitive description of the main character, Anna- pouring wine, drinking wine, sloshing wine, spilling wine on her robe, putting her robe on or her robe falling open- very tedious and boring. It wasn't like I needed it to be described for each day, as it was always the same for her. Every day. As i was reading, I wondered if the author was copying and pasting these descriptions over and over when he talked about Anna's daily intake of wine and then her sloppy behavior. The story was kind of interesting, but I found the descriptions to be too redundant. Another reader said it well when she said that the book could have been much shorter.

I heard that this novel was the breakout debut novel of 2018, written under a gender-neutral pseudonym by a male editor of thrillers at a major publishing house. It was, reviewers said, steeped in film noir, well written, fast paced, original, and a love letter to classic Hitchcock films. It has, of course, already been optioned as a film, probably starring Reese Witherspoon.SIGH.I read thrillers regularly, and have read all of the classic mysteries (including every Agatha Christie novel, all of Sherlock Holmes, Dorothy Sayers, et al.), and I assure you that The Woman in the Window is a typical domestic thriller. The protagonist is unreliable, she’s a tortured soul, she’s an alcoholic downing buckets of Merlot and popping pills left and right, she’s a pathetic and dull basket case who can’t leave her sprawling home and spends all day on the internet, drinking, and spying on her neighbors. She thinks she witnesses a crime but can’t rely upon her sad, wine-soaked brain; hence no one buys her rantings about the neighbors trying to whack one another. Or not. Blah blah.It bores me simply typing up the plot summary of this novel, which amounted to nothing more than a Rear Window/Girl on the Train copycat. I understand that unreliable female narrators sell, but please give readers some credit. We’re not total dupes. More importantly, we are sick of these women who can’t get their sh1t together and are always drunk and falling apart. Give us a female narrator with some grit, some backbone, some moxy, and drop her into a truly original and engaging story. It may not become a bestseller (God knows why not), but it will certainly earn 5 stars from this disillusioned reader. I’ve reached my limit of recent lame thrillers.
