I was new to calligraphy when I purchased this book. I was interested and wanted to gain a little knowledge and to be given an introduction to calligraphy without frustration. This is a workbook that provides a wealth of knowledge and inspires the artist to work at calligraphy. The history behind calligraphy and the different styles are brought to light. Documents are provided as examples and the author includes her own pieces of work. The work is gorgeous and inspirational. Tips for how to begin, how to hold the pen, types of ink and paper, practice, clear instructions and advice, and much more are given. This book is a steal! I will look into more documents by the author of this informative and practical workbook. So much work, effort, and thought went into making this a very practical resource.

Im left handed and I do calligraphy to improve my writing.This book is very well done and helpful.Note to the left handed-there are 2 ways to do this;either write in a hooked style from above and complete the strokes backwards or buy a left handed nib and write from underneath.If you chose the latter style then get the left handed calligraphy book.If youre old and set in your ways like me the hook style is easier to do.Either way, this is a good book to have.You just have to translate it into left handed just like you do everything else in the universe. ;)

A fantastic book for the beginner wanting to learn the art of calligraphy! It's been awhile since I've done calligraphy and bought this because of the templates in the back. When I received it I was very impressed. The author explains all the different types of calligraphy and what you will need as a beginner....if you would like to get more involved, she does list other materials needed. I like the option of being able to lay the book on a shelf and the use of the spiral binder! It's surprising how that little thing is such a big help! Well worth the money!

I used this to teach myself how to write with a calligraphy pen before using the new skill to write my guests' names on the place setting cards for my wedding reception. In my humble opinion, they turned out great, but that was only because this book was very helpful in showing me what I needed to do!

As someone who is a rank amateur this book is everything I wanted in order to learn which equipment to consider and how to use it. The historical illustrations are beautiful and colorful as well as educational. There are practical worksheets and removable reusable guide sheets. The techniques taught range from basic to advanced. This book alone can take me a long way and entertain me for a long time. The size is just big enough without being awkward to handle, and the spiral binding is so practical and nicely designed with the outside spine having a hard cover.

This book has several styles of calligraphy and really goes into detail about how to create the letters. It also gives good advice about what types of paper to use as well as what pens a person will need. I also liked the section about creating a layout for a calligraphy project. With many illustrations and tips, I am eager to get started. I really like the removable transparent guide sheets at the end of the book. They create an excellent way to practice each style. The spiral binding allows a person to actually practice the strokes by placing a piece of paper over them. This is a great book for beginners!!!!!

I'm a calligrapher and bought this book early in my journey. Although I focus on pointed pen right now, this book is a good introduction to broad nib lettering and I look forward to using it more fully.

My son likes this book once it was pointed out that it teaches technique. He wanted something that went to showing a lot of different, really fancy writing. This book does not go so much into variety, but is good for a beginner to grasp a concept of technique that helps them move on to other things.

A VAST MACHINE is an excellent historical review of meteorology/climatology.However, mathematical treatment of fluid dynamics is very complex. The advent of computers has greatly enhanced weather prediction and analysis, but even today in meteorology five to six days forecasts are at best are only eighty to eighty five percent accurate. Forecasting years ahead, as in climatology are, in my estimation, only educated guesses. We simply don't have a comprehensive enough data base, in climatology, for dependable forecast analysis even with computer models. Although Mr.Edwards presents his case admirably, I am not convinced we are ready to forecast climate with any degree of accuracy now or in the foreseeable future.

"Probably the best overview book about the workings of meteorology and climatology, this book also serves as a refresher course for people in the business. As a "seasoned" climatologist, reading this book was like visiting an old friend, and meeting all the children and descendants.His book, as he puts it, presents "an historical account of climate science as a global knowledge infrastructure". As such, it's a must read for anyone new to climatology as it give not only a useful history of the development of the systems we rely upon (WMO, WWW, GCOS, WCRP, IPCC, etc) but also puts to to rest some past controversies (myth of cooling, the MSU errors, bias removal in GHCN). I was impressed by Edwards' use of recent papers by Peterson, Karl, Easterling, well blended with older works references by Smagarenski, Sagen, Manabe. And of course his good friend, the late Schneider is there throughout.Edwards makes the point that it is through models that we revamp our knowledge about climate, whether these are simulation models based on physical theory, reanalysis models that blend observations with forecast simulations into uniform global data, or data analysis models that produce coherent data from heterogeneous, time-varying information. Climate knowledge works like historians work; there is always more to learn about the past.The book suffered a bit, I think, from not using Zillman's excellent (and short!) history of climate progress (though I might have missed it in the 67 pages of references! A time line of the decades of progress in understanding climate change, from GARP, Villach, Espoo, Rio, etc. would have helped.I especially enjoyed the description of reanalysis (chapter 12), the summary of pre-19th century observations, and best of all, the Greek derivation of climate - klima - from "inclination" - the slant of the suns rays with latitude with the tilt of the earth. Best of all, I see that Edwards has a degree in "Science, Technology, and Society" - exactly the course of study my son is following - along with an engineering degree. If Edwards' book is any guide, this is certainly what we need more of.I'd be remiss if I didn't add that Edwards includes useful, dispassionate, historical references to S. Fred Singer's questionable work in fighting the science of climate change, acid raid, and the ozone hole! The Author revisits the definitions of infrastructure and data at depths that I personally have not encountered before and his articulations have considerably enriched my understanding of both these concepts and helped me better perceive their roles in several fields: infrastructure in the area of networking and data in the field of climate science. Having read this book I now perceive infrastructure as including perceptual structures that influence and constrain our perceptions and I understand data as being generated through perceptual processes.The authors portrayal of the meteorological weather forecasting networks enables the perception of their growing across the face of earth and linking up to form a global network that generated the World Meteorological Organization in 1950 and the Inter governmental Panel on Climate Change in 1988 gives a clear portrayal of the rising of a Global Network of scientists capable of perceiving planetary processes and providing the human species with strategic guidance.These perceptions and their articulation are nested in a bed of very deep and detailed information regarding data, data generating methodologies and processes as well as significant events that every serious student of climate sciences will benefit from familiarizing themselves with.

I purchased this work book to be an extra tool that goes along with the text book and was sorely disappointed. This book did not come with an audio cd. Starting at page LP.13 the questions ask you to listen and repeat. However there is nothing to listen to. There was not any cd with the text book either so I am extremely frustrated.Update.I called Mcgraw Hill just to verify that no audio cd came with the book and how I would go about getting the audio cd. Well, a very nice lady, Emily, informed me that Mcgraw Hill did not include the audio cd with the book, but I could purchase the cd directly from them. She then told me that the price of the cd was $527.16. I then decline the offer to purchase the cd. This is the very reason why I detest this book publisher. They do these same type of practices with college students. Why sell an audio workbook without a cd, and why make the cd so expensive? If I had known before, I would not have purchased the workbook. College students get the worse of it because they have to purchase expensive books and online learning centers that accompany the book but do not help with the subject matter, since they only answer the easy questions, but never the more involved questions that need multiple steps, and the student are forces out of hundreds of dollars for math and science classes because the professors insist on using these online centers for homework. Carl F. Andreone, P.E., is president of Heat Transfer Consultants, Inc., and a consultant on power generation heat transfer equipment to Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation. An internationally recognized authority on specifying feedwater heaters and auxiliary exchangers, he has worked on projects for more than 400 closed feedwater heaters in the last 15 years. Stanley Yokell, P.E., is past president of MGT, Inc., and a senior consultant to Hagler, Bailly Consulting, Inc., an international economics and engineering consulting firm. He is a leading expert on tube-to-tubesheet joining of tubular heat exchangers, and has been involved in the design and construction of over 3,000 tubular heat exchangers. Since 1979, he has consulted on a variety of problems with process and power generation heat exchanger problems. The authors have presented more than 100 short intensive courses on shell-and-tube heat exchangers, closed feed water heaters, and tubular exchanger inspection, maintenance, and repair in the United States, Canada, and Europe. This an excellent reference book for maintaining shell and tube heat exchangers but it suffers from some flaws. The printing is substandard and it needs more graphics. It would be nice see some pictures showing the types of problems mentioned. Better theoretical development would be useful. Theory gets a bad rep. but it helps to define problem boundaries. Knowing why a scale can be removed by chemical means is rather important. There is the risk of over-dosing and causing severe corrosion in tubing if you don't know why there are limits.Still, this is a rare book and may be worth your money if you don't have detailed vendor information. I bought it, and I am a picky book buyers. A space in my book collection must be earned and this book earned such a spot. I just hope something better comes along.If this review helped, please add your vote -- Thanks.

I got this to add to my professional library as a vessel/heat exchanger engineer. it's a good text that is nicely organized. Strongly recommend this on eif you liked Yokells original "blue book".

I am using this book for my Introductory international relations class. Art and Jervis choose excellent articles that counter each other so you are able to form your own opinion based on various scholars. Though it is not comprehensive, the text is essential to learnings in International relations

Great quality and clear printing but...The price is ridiculous for just renting it for a semester. Not worth it.

Nice collection of articles on issues in International Relations. Covers historical concepts like realism and liberalism, has commentary on current trends, and and makes predictions for the future. Has a lot on globalization.

very interesting, but not a light read. I'd suggest taking notes in the margins, highlighting and looking up the references. and don't forget the caffeine some of the included essays can get a bit dry

I order this copy of the book and was given a later version that was not easy to follow for my course.

I've been reading many picture book biographies lately, and this one definitely stands out. Joan Proctor loved reptiles as a child--studying them, caring for them, watching them, even having tea parties with them! As an adult, she became the first female curator at the Reptile House of the London Zoo. She did a lot of work with Komodo dragons. They were highly misunderstood at the time, and she introduced them to the world as the gentle creatures they are. In her short life, Joan became world renowned for her work. The pictures are wonderful--very colorful, unique, and fun. And there are so many elements that would appeal to children, all written in such an engaging way: The tea parties with lizards (that deserves two mentions)! The "fearsome" Komodo dragons. Her pet crocodile when she was just 16. And the surgeries she performed on the lizards. Joan Proctor was a fascinating woman, and I'm excited for young readers to get to know her better!

This is a delightful picture book biography about a resilient, bright woman who followed her dreams at a time when women weren't usually allowed to do that. Joan Procter became a scientist against all kinds of odds, following her passion for reptiles and in particular the Komodo dragon. . .the illustrations are gorgeous and well suited to the text and the author handles well the balance of uplifting information with the challenges (Joan's chronic illness and premature death). It's a great read-aloud and one that kids will want to flip through on their own to revisit the colorful portraits of the reptiles. I highly recommend this book.

My granddaughter has a spotted gecko and loves dragon lizards and dragons in general so this book was a no-brainer for her best Christmas present ever. The information about Joan Proctor was intriguing and the illustrations made the story come to life. Her perseverance and success as the first woman to head the reptile exhibit at the London Zoo proved that smart ambitious women can achieve milestones in their career. Great book for animal lovers.

Joan Proctor, Dragon Doctor is my favorite non-fiction kids book of all time! An extremely well written and beautifully illustrated account of a girl that wasn’t like the rest. (Also an example of a girl that struggled with health issues and still lived to the fullest). I’ll be gifting this book to my child’s teacher soon!

Engaging writing. Gorgeous art. Informative backmatter. I loved this biography of Joan Procter, a young herpetologist at the London Zoo.

This is an inspiring true story of a young woman whose love of reptiles led to a pioneering career as a zoologist and herpetologist. It’s beautifully written and delightfully illustrated - I purchased this as a gift for my goddaughter and I know she’ll love this as much as I did! :)

Great story and wonderful pictures. My kids loves it and it is great to see a scientist as the main character.
