Knowing I'm a wine lover, a friend recently gave me this excellent book to read. Having worked in the trade in one capacity or another for almost 30 years, I recall the dust cloud created in the 1990s as winemakers fell over each other racing to put the word ‘organic’ on their labels. I heard a lot of consumer questions about it back then, primarily: what exactly does it mean? Within the question was the suggestion that “organic” could mean any number of things (that was true, and sometimes it meant just about nothing). Anyone paying attention to the industry has noticed the next wave rolling in: Sustainability. And I don’t mean to cynically dismiss it as just another marketing fad (although some producers will certainly treat it like one), because there’s a bigger message here. It occurs to me that for most of the many-centuries-long history of winemaking in the world, ‘sustainability’ was not a concept to be pasted on, but a (un-‘labeled’) philosophy driving the whole enterprise: farming was done simply and very naturally. So the very existence of a ‘sustainability movement’ in wine is an indication that the business, at some point, lost its way and is now (over)due for a course correction. In this book, Sandra Taylor argues persuasively that wine consumers can be a driver for greater sustainability in agriculture in general, because caring to know where and how (and even by whom) grapes are farmed is much more central to their enjoyment of the product than with, say, tomatoes. She walks the reader through the currently accepted ‘sustainability’ protocols (so people might actually know what that word means when they encounter it on a wine label) and illustrates, with copious case studies from the wine business (and others), the opportunities and challenges for producers as they navigate these waters in search of meaningful, and yes, scalably profitable solutions. A survey of retailers, restaurateurs and distributors indicates that, even now in ‘sustainability’s’ relative infancy, almost 40% report frequently basing their selections around sustainability; this is not a fringe issue. A House for Hope doesn't bill itself as a book of theology for Unitarian Universalists much less a book of Unitarian Universalist theology. It is subtitled "The Promise of Progressive Religion for the Twenty-First Century." Both of the authors are identified with Progressive (Liberal) Christianity -- Parker is (also) a United Methodist minister, Buehrens is a frequent speaker at events of the Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship. Both authors have identified themselves as students of Process Theology which appears to be the theology of choice of Progressive Christians (witness the Process and Faith website).In spite of the above -- and in spite of the occasional reference to Jesus -- I don't think this book could fairly be considered a work of Christian theology. It is, however, theistic in tone -- albeit not theistic in a supernatural sense -- but not at the expense of being anti-Humanistic. Still, it would take a very openminded Humanist to find this book congenial. Then again, it would take a very openminded Christian as well.By not pointing A House for Hope specifically at UUs, Parker & Buehrens are sidestepping the question of whether such a theology (and in spite of differences they do present mostly a united theological position) could address a real constituency within the UUA or if their intention is to shape one. I think the answer is both. With a Humanistic wing that itself has a classic (rationalistic) as well as an innovative (nature-centered) side; a Christian wing that has both a neo-Protestant and a post-modern component; self-identified Jews, Buddhists, and Pagans; the theology of A House for Hope seeks to address a theistic center which may or may not be the future of the denomination.I have no reservations recommending this book with the above caveats for those who reject a theistic premise altogether, or one which is clearly rooted in Unitarian (and to a lesser extent Universalist) theologies of the past.

Very thoughtful viewpoints.

I found this book useful for writing a sermon about covenant. I enjoyed the metaphorsof different parts of the house to discuss theology. Parker and Buerhens each contributed chapters for each section and I found it interesting how their theologies compared and contrasted with one another.

Unitarian Universalists have allowed ourselves to think that we have no theology, and bring nothing to the table in terms of a religious heritage. This is a great reflection on our history, and our involvement as a progressive religious movement.

This a very good text for use in my Fundamentals of American Law class. Good for knowledge of the subject matter and for test/quiz review areas. Chapters divided into an outline form, which is the way I take my notes, and has just the right amount of information without getting overly wordy.I recommend this to any 100/200 level intro course professor.

This book gave me a good start to the Introduction of Law. It served it's purpose.

I'm a lawyer myself so I couldn't help reading parts of it.Generally speaking, it does a very good job--I almost wish I had had such a book when I first started law many, many years ago. It does a good job of giving the big picture. Good set-off of definitions.My only critique is that this book is written at a pretty sophisticated level. Great if you are an upperclassman but some community college students may find the book challenging, especially if they are not adept at understanding intangible concepts.Overall, a good value for the money if you buy it used.

Let me just start off by saying I LOVED the blue print and illustrations at the beginning of each chapter. I really love unique touches like that. Makes the reading experience special. Jepp tells the tale of a dwarf teenage growing up in the late 1500s. He has a life at the court of the Infanta and longs for more than what life is giving him.I found Jepp fairly likable - a mix of annoying, obstinate, determined and hopefully (rightfully suited to a teenage boy in his circumstances). It did take me a while to get through the book though. I felt the pace was clunky at first, then sped up towards the middle, then slowed down again and then, in a rush, everything happened to quickly wrap up the book. I think the pace was the biggest drawback.Most of the characters surrounding Jepp were just as colorful and varied, and I especially love the world created around astronomer, Tycho. Based on Marsh's description of his castle - it's a place I'd love to visit.I may be holding on to this book more because of the fact that it has blue ink than for it's creative merits - however, I'm still glad I read the book and I recommended it - a solid read for young adults or fans of YA fiction.

At first the book moves a bit slowly, but it has an intriguing premise as well as main character. There is a little too much graphic content / difficulty in wording for a 6th grader or below, but advanced / mature 7th grade readers and above would find it manageable. A knowledge about medieval courts would make the book more interesting but not necessary. I plan on giving a book talk on it to my 7th grade Honors English class in conjunction with our medieval historical-fiction book club unit.

Katherine Marsh can write, as I already knew from her earlier work. Her story of Jepp is longer and richer than her first novels, reaching a deeper level of storytelling skill. It touches on themes of destiny and equality and longing, all of which should resonate with the intended young adult audience. I have given the book to several others, including adults who like fantasy fiction and historical fiction, and every one of them loved it too.It's a great gift, very suitable for a teenaged reader!

With 25 pages left in Jepp I forced myself to insert the bookmark so I could get one more night of before-bedtime glee in reading it. It was truly a treasure and an adventure to read. I teach high school history and could not contain my enthusiasm as I described the plot to my students. I probably sounded insane explaining a dwarf inspired by Velasquez paintings and the complex intertwining of astronomy/astrology and the eccentricities of Tycho Brahe, but as I said to my students- just read it- it's captivating, enlightening, and dear.

My eleven-year-old daughter and I took turns reading this aloud to each other. She was reluctant at first, especially because the language is, at times, deliberately flowery and elaborate, almost as though the narrator is trying hard to show off his great vocabulary, but my daughter's interest in the fate of the character ultimately won her over and she saw the book through to the end while reading the last twenty chapters on her own. My original interest in this story stems from my interest in the history of astronomy and Tycho Brahe. Jepp had been introduced to me before in another historical fiction novel by John Banville, but in that story he seemed grotesque and pitiable. This is a much more detailed and kinder rendition of the character, who was a real person in history, but whose life, motivations, and fate were not as well documented as some others.Here Jepp is a teenage boy. It was around 200 pages or so before the subject's sexuality entered the story in a physical way--mostly it remains within the confines of very innocent and knightly love for various females--but at one point he admits to tingling in his genitals and before he can 'take care of it' or some similar phrase, someone arrives to speak with him. The reference to sexual arousal and masturbation is appropriate considering Jepp's age, but it is normally not approached in literature. Being a physician, I prefer an open and realistic approach to these things, so I was pleased rather than annoyed to see those references included in the story.Overall a worthwhile read.

I fist heard about this book from a feature spot on the radio and became interested. And wow, am I glad I bought this.It is a fantastic and engrossing tale of a young man trying to find his place in the world.SPOILERS:I cried when the moose died. Seriously.

I teach astronomy and this book was a fun take on one of the most eccentric astronomers of all times!

I appreciated the wonderful writing and picturesque 1500s environment. Jepp's life lessons about such things as friendship, pain, young love, and appreciation for differences are important and lightly expressed. I gave it to the middle school readers in my family for Christmas.

I took the opportunity of some holiday downtime in Borneo to read Responsible Leadership by Sir Mark Moody-Stuart - which seemed quite appropriate given a large chunk of the book is drawn on his experiences of working for Shell in the region……Brunei and in Kuala Lumpur. However Sir Mark draws on an incredible breadth of experience primarily in the oil and gas sector that has seen him live and work in senior roles all across the world. A core part of the book compares and contrasts his experience of leadership positions within Shell in Malaysia, Nigeria and Oman and how the local context and role of Government has a profound effect on the company’s impact on the economic development of the country – in Malaysia and Oman largely positive, in Nigeria less so!This is no ego driven auto-biography nor a one-sided view of a free-market fundamentalist who sees business as a panacea for the world’s problems. Instead it is a thoughtful and often self-deprecating critique with wisdom synthesized from a very successful 50 year career, particularly the last 20 years which saw him lead two global giants – Shell and Anglo American and sit on the Boards of many others including Accenture and HSBC. His own successes, failures and reflections on the power and limitations of private sector are shared openly and he draws out lessons learned and how his own views have evolved over time.The books spans issues ranging from endemic corruption and dealing with Heads of State in somewhat unsavory regimes through to the challenges of rising inequality and how to address the negative impacts of climate change. At a stage in his life and career where he appears largely free of vested interests or agendas, Sir Mark provides great insights with a candour that would be difficult for an existing CEO to give. As such, his reflections would be highly relevant to such incumbents who find themselves at the top of large public companies in an increasing volatile and complex world. But the book is equally relevant to more junior levels of management of or to today’s cadre of MBA students who will have to learn to manage in a world where decisions are rarely black or white, right or wrong, but instead highly nuanced and context specific.I had high expectations of this book and it did not disappoint. Sir Mark is one of a small handful of my personal “business heros” who have laid the foundations for sustainable and responsible leadership that a growing number of today’s CEOs are starting to emulate. His contribution to the sustainable and responsible business cause has been immense and through this book, is clearly ongoing. I would commend it to anyone who aspires to a leadership role in any organization, be it business, government or civil society.

Whereas the idea of 'responsible leadership' has gained much traction in recent years, this account of it is not coming from the classroom, but from the trenches. The book goes beyond theory and represents the story of someone who has led business and other institutions with wisdom, discernment and moral integrity in the face of difficult challenges and in the context of tough industries such as oil and minerals. In talking about ethics, responsibility and sustainability as leadership imperatives, this is a book makes you realise that responsible leadership "is easier said than done". Mark Moody-Stuart is a humble man and so is the book an authentic account of a servant of the common good.

Few companies have been through the sustainability wringer to quite the same degree as Royal Dutch/Shell. According to Mark Moody-Stuart, Shell's annus horribilis came in 1995, in the middle of his decade-long tenure as managing director, when the company was hit hard on two fronts. These were the Brent Spar oil platform controversy in Europe and the outrage that followed Nigeria's execution of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and his colleagues.Moody-Stuart's Responsible Leadership: Lessons from the Front Line of Sustainability and Ethics, which he bills as "part memoir, part confessional, part manifesto for leadership," provides a detailed view of these events and much more. It draws mainly on the author's 40-year career at Shell. Moody-Stuart grew up in Antigua, where his family had lived since the 17th century and was instrumental in the development of the island's sugar industry. He joined Shell in 1966 after earning his doctorate in geology at Cambridge, and worked for the company in 10 countries on his journey to becoming its managing director and chairman--posts he held until 2001.The book, which bears my endorsement on its dust jacket, provides candid accounts of Moody-Stuart's dealings with prime ministers and dictators, colleagues and competitors, and investors and NGOs. This is an insider's view of the machinations within organizations as disparate as Shell and the United Nations, and it engages hot-button issues, such as top team remuneration, human rights abuses, and corruption, head-on.But Moody-Stuart delays his account of how he awoke to the corporate sustainability agenda until the book's biographical coda. The key moment was when he first became chairman of a public company, the Shell refining company in Port Dickson, Malaysia, and attended his first shareholder meeting--the company was listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. This is when he fully recognized his responsibility to the thousands of people who had invested their savings in the company he led. What is most striking about Moody-Stuart is how this newfound sense of responsibility to shareholders continually expanded until it encompassed all of the stakeholders in a business, producing one of the wisest leaders I have ever come across.The themes of trust and inclusion ring through the book--not just as values to be adopted, but as core leadership attributes to be developed and exercised. Moody-Stuart calls on business leaders to "take off the `corporate hat' and put on the `citizen hat.'" This ability is key to building the trust needed to successfully manage the kind of coordinated action necessary in addressing global issues. Although the book is not a detailed primer on how to work for the common good, it contains many forceful recommendations, with the weight of experience behind them. For example, the best way to build the trust needed for cooperation with the not-for-profits of civil society is exceptional transparency. The author tells us that he and Royal Dutch/Shell learned that lesson the hard way in 1995.Moody-Stuart extends the need for transparency and inclusion into his views on regulation. "Business people should support sensible regulatory frameworks instead of instinctively arguing against all forms of regulation," he says, adding that even though business should be involved in framing sensible legislation, "to prevent special pleading it is advisable to have input from other business sectors as well as civil society."Trust and inclusion are also essential to dealing with climate change, a critical issue that emerged during Moody-Stuart's tenure at Shell and one that is covered in a key chapter in the book. The gist of the former oilman's argument is that whereas business, government, and consumers have all been prone to blaming each other, the situation now calls for a "three-cornered approach" that enlists all three in the achievement of low-carbon outcomes. For such an approach to work, argues Moody-Stuart, two conditions must be met: First, the solutions--alternative transportation and energy--that business espouses must provide consumers with levels of utility and cost that are similar to those of conventional solutions. The author believes this will translate to "significant investment in public transport, particularly urban public transport, and work on low-carbon vehicles."Second, a "broad regulatory framework driving efficiency...as well as a framework to establish carbon cap and trade schemes" will be needed that, in essence, place the onus for action on business. "This is a case where the market on its own will not deliver solutions," argues Moody-Stuart, eschewing price-driven solutions--such as gasoline taxes--for their unintended side effects. The framework he proposes would include "building regulations, transport efficiency standards, industry-sector efficiency standards, and so on."Almost as an afterthought, the author adds a third condition: "that the creativity of the market is necessary to find solutions, to provide choice, and to guide the allocation of resources." He does not elaborate on this condition, but clearly he has faith that business can deliver on it.There's an interesting footnote in this chapter: Moody-Stuart says that he often discussed environmental issues with John Browne, then CEO of BP--in the days before the Deepwater Horizon disaster. But in a time when sustainable solutions often require broad-based cooperation, we should encourage those discussions because they also can ensure that the leaders mired in the established paradigm do not drown out those who see the need for change.
