Very good book but it is not complete without the video. I recommend it to any serious learner of German.

I purchased this book and the rest of the items that go with the program to teach my bilingual daughter proper German. It's a good program, and you make progress very quickly in essential areas of grammar and vocabulary. I only gave it three stars, though, because the story of the family portrayed in this book is very dreary and not that interesting. I believe to make students interested in a language it's better to show nice and fun things about the country first. The story starts with the father losing his job. Also, the images that go with this program on the video can make students think that Germany is just gray and ugly.In addition, the whole thing between the American professor having the German girl, who isn't really the same German girl as in the story, help him create a program is very confusing.This probably wouldn't be my first choice as a program for German, because of the reasons stated, but it teaches the language well. I bought it, because it's what is being used at hour high school.

this book was very good. it teaches the fundimental grammer, vocabulary, and structure of the german language. it also teaches about the cultrue.

I read this book 40 (+) years ago at the library, just bought and re-read it while delving into the pedigree of the survival techniques and tools taught by practitioners here in the US. The book is, of course, about much more than that. In fact its transcendent theme is probably the adaptability of the individual human, ripped from his native culture and natural environment (both of which were decimated in Ishi's case, as in that of so many indigenous peoples, by European invasion and settlement). Ishi did adapt reasonably well to the Anglo-American world of the early 20th C to which he surrendered himself in a last desperate play for self-preservation; he persevered and even prospered after the trauma of seeing his tribe, family and natural environment destroyed. He did so in pretty unusual circumstances, as the ward of the anthropology museum at UC Berkeley, its benevolent staff and their family and friends. Most indigenous people were not so lucky: if not murdered, enslaved or pushed to the hostile margins of the human and natural environment, they were laid low by the infectious diseases bourn (albeit unwittingly) by their conquerors.A sobering read, worth going back to occasionally, just like Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", to remind oneself of how we got where we are, and who paid the price for it.

Great book - something everyone should read - especially those who think of North America's indigenous populations as "primitive." Instead, this. book describes a very sophisticated culture estimated to have developed over at least 3000 years within the environment of California's Sierra Nevada foothills. It tells the true story of savage and greedy men from the gold rush era invading their territory, robbing and murdering men, women, children and babies. After this, Ishi became the last surviving member of his tribe. Now he's gone, too. What an incredible loss. We should all think twice any time the majority or someone representing "the law" decides a particular set of human beings is "less than human."

This is truly one of the best historical works of our time. I personally lived near where ISHI dwelled in Deer Creek Canyon between Red Bluff and Chico California. Not far from Lassen National Park at the junction of the North Tip of the Sierras and the Southern tip of the Cascade Range. The remainder of the Tribe before him were indiscreetly wiped out by early settlers of the area. and grandparents of early Ranchers.

This book is masterfully written biography; fully descriptive of the man and his culture in dimensions that one doesn't normally even think about -- highly sensitive, yet in no way soppy. That Ishi was the last of his people makes for a profound tale. Had I known him, however, I think I would have remembered him as much or more for a gentle and perceptive nature that seemed to characterize him as a person to the end. I wish I could have known him.

This book puts the reader in a dreamy daze, pondering over the beauty of the almost utopian way of Yana life. But that joy turns into anger and tears upon reading the accounts of how it was all destroyed over a lustful whim by the illegal immigrant gold miners.

I learned something about topics I never knew existed. What more can you ask of a book.(I had dinner at a restaurant that presents the guest check, at the end of the evening, inside a book. A copy of this book was handed to me. I was intrigued. I snapped a photo of the cover and bought it on Amazon.)

How amazing to read about the personality of Ishi, the Indian man forced out of his home land by the encroachment of civilization. He wasn't just the last of his tribe. He was a real person - a man with interests, concerns, likes and dislikes. Fascinating read!

Of all the books that I have read about Native Americans, this one gave me the most personal picture of day to day, non-warfare life. It also provides an intimate glimpse of how Ishi thought and felt, about himself, about others, about the world.Although Ishi's story is tragically sad, and his death seemingly premature and ironic, his resilience and optimism are an inspiration. Despite the incredible hardships of his life, he apparently entered the foreign world of white California without harboring any deep resentment or even bitterness. I found his enthusiasm to be both incomprehensible and very moving, which served to temper the sadness of his story. In the end, I was left with a more positive than negative aftertaste, in contrast to other books about Native Americans which tend to focus heavily on issues of injustice, warfare, humiliation, etc.While all those negative themes are undercurrents to Ishi's story, the way in which he coped with his trying life is the most fascinating aspect of the book. In fact, the only negative thing I would say about this book is that a large portion of the beginning is dedicated to historical background about Ishi's tribe, and I felt anxious to read the more personal accounts of Ishi the man. However, this background information is clearly necessary to understand Ishi's life, and is written as colorfully (but acurately) as possible. Even though the historical details are researched (and referenced) carefully, this does not read like an academic text.This book left me feeling that if Ishi, a man accustomed to living in verdant tranquility, could find peace living in a bustling city, then he should serve as an inspiration for everyone struggling to cope with the hectic pace of modern life.

Beautiful book and the last pages explain important facts about migration in a language that helps kids to understand this phenomenon. I'm happy that I got it for my kid. While reading it, my kid came with all kind of questions related with culture, migration, community, poverty, and I think this book helped and will help her to be aware and understand these topics which are more and more common nowadays.

This book is cute; however I believe it’s more for children who understand the concept of what these people in the story went through. It’s more appropriate for children 4th grade and up. I don’t think kinder-3rd grade would get the concept. However it’s cute and gets the concept out just not something a 5-8 year old could comprehend.

This is a charming and well written book with beautiful artwork and an important story relevant to our time. Stories of immigrant struggles are essential reading for all, especially school-aged children, to build understanding and community. Also, being in Spanish and English, if offers the opportunity to work on your language skills, something I always appreciate. Thanks for bringing this special story to print. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages!

The story is gripping, bringing an international situation to the level of a father and son who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their family. The illustrations are stunningly vibrant. The bilingual text shows respect to the real people described here, and makes the story available to a wide range of readers. Highly recommended!

This is a poignant story of a bond between father and son during difficult circumstances; it is both a story of love and travail. It is all the better because it is a true story. It describes a situation which is so relevant today -- the quest for opportunity and a better life. It is both realistic and hopeful -- different from the dire stories which we can read daily. For these reasons, it should be a must-read for young people -- all of whom will face difficulties sometime in their lives. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and plan to give a copy to the library in our nearby school.

My five year old friend loved this book when I read it to her so it is a keeper, a great addition to my children's book collection. "La Frontera" not only tells a compelling story with a powerful through-line - will Alfredo reunite with his family? - it simply and compassionately teaches about immigration, in both English and Spanish! What a gift for the ESL teacher or anyone studying language or social studies. Or for just plain readers up to about 4th grade.

Amazing story! and couldn't be more timely with the shocking news of late of how we are treating immigrants coming into this country, splitting up already scared children from their parents. This is a true story written in both Spanish and English with a happy ending detailing the struggle a father and son go through together to cross the border and find a secure, safe home. I can't wait to read it to my grandchildren and think everyone, no matter where you live, should buy one for their local library and school.

Living near the border, I was very interested to read this book. It is very well done and I am sharing with my third grade grandchild. I love that both Spanish and English are included, as the grandkids are in the midst of learning Spanish. I have also recommended this book to all my tennis friends that live near the border, in the hopes they will buy a copy for the children in their families. It will help to give them a better understanding of border issues that they hear so much about.

Lovely art! It's a little deceiving with the whole 50 artists thing, as there are are only 12 poster sized pieces and then 50 little thumbnails at the back, but I thought that would probably be the case since it is a calendar after all.

This is more of a poster book than a calendar, so purchase it with that in mind. The artwork is really beautiful, lots of variety in the illustrations, the look great on my wall!

I'd give this 5 stars for the artwork but the calendar (you know, the actual functional part of the item?) left a lot to be desired. It was very small and linear instead of the typical Sunday - Saturday grid layout. Overall I'm satisfied but I wasn't expecting to have to buy another calendar to use with my calendar.

The art on this is lovely, but it is a terrible calendar. All the days are show in a single line at the bottom, so you have to squint to see them, let alone what day of the week each is; there's nowhere to mark down holidays or other date-related notes. So if you want some very nice Trek-related posters, go for it, but if you're looking for a functional calendar, steer clear. I'll be back to my standard calendar next year.

It's a bit late in 2017, but wanted to share I love this poster, it's just that the prints curl a bit rather than hang flat and flush to the wall.

I got this calendar for my husband for his birthday. After the year is over I plan on framing the detachable prints to hang in our office/"nerd cave." Note: if you're looking for a calendar with space to write on, this is not it. More of a reference for dates.

I love it! It's beautiful!Not really great as a useful calendar as there are just numbers for the days and no squares to write in. But That's Not The Point! The point is that it is gorgeous and full of interesting and original Star Trek art.

I am in love with this calendar and if you're a trek fan, I think you will too! The pages are thick and easily converted into prints after the month is through!
