hapter 42 actually brought a tear to my eye. This is another fast paced, un put downable Zayn story. I didnt want to stop reading, much to the detriment of my mornings. You do not need to read the other books first, but you would be robbing yourself if not. Zayn has depth, and just overall these stories are well written. I both look forward to the next, and am saddened to have Zayn's story/focus gone.

Another superb book from this author. Riveting from the first to last page. It follows Zayn in his fourth year at magic academy. If you like fantasy books this is one that you should read.

I never know where the story is goi g to go. Can’t wait to see how it ends.

Zany is back at the hundred halls, his mentor is Priyanka and she is one tough mentor for sure. Zany is having migraines fo some unknown reason and they seem to happen at the worst time possible. His sister Nevaeh is worried about him, so she goes to the city to try to find answers as to what has happened to him. She is one tenacious sister and won’t stop until she gets all the answers to help her brother.Nevaeh takes her food truck to the city, she figures she can set up and make some money while trying t figure out what’s up with Zayn. The dragons are threatening To take over the hundred halls because the wells are not being maintained which is causing aa thinning in the layers between realms.Now that shoul really get you to see that this series is awesome and you will have to read the book to find out how it ends!

This is the next installment in the story of Zayn, and it was absolutely riveting. I loved that it kept me guessing, and I really enjoyed that we saw a little more of Zayn's family this time. I absolutely couldn't put this book down. I can hardly wait for the next one, which is the final piece of Zayn's story. I love the concept of the Hundred Halls, and eagerly look forward to the new books and series to come.I receive an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend both this author and this series! Carpenter is on my favorite authors list, and I bet he'll end up on your favorite list, too!

This world of A Hundred Halls is real, it must be. The intensity of Zayn the passion of Neveah his sister, the brotherhood of the five mages it all comes together, the good the bad the right and wrong. When the 5 mages work together it's like a Seal team unfortunately during this fourth year something is very wrong with Zayn as he starts letting everyone down. This series is so good it's going in my collection.

A great read. This is a fast paced read. That is action packed. Zayn is forced to make a decision what will that chiice be. If you love The Supernatural, then this is the read for you. This read grabs you right from the first page and before you know it the read is over, it has a great storyline that the Author really brings the story to fruition. John Titor's time traveling from 2036 to 1975 to retrieve an IBM 5100 computer from his grandfather to head off Y2k and the UNIX problem in 2036 kept me riveted. Through online posts in 1999-2000, presents lots of interesting information about technological advances as well as warnings about potential health problems and solutions; nuclear war that ends our second civil war between the government and citizens. The resulting Constitution will be restored to the intention of our founding fathers, getting rid of all amendments beyond The Bill of Rights and getting rid of the electoral college. Fascinating!

It's a very well-written book and I knew the story of John Titor via various documentaries. I was really looking forward to reading this book as I was greatly hoping I would have a difficult time determining whether or not it was actually true. In chapter one there are two excerpts that kind of ruin the book for me before I really even got into it:"In 2015, Russia launched a surprise nuclear attack on the United States, Europe and China.""So in 2036, Titor climed into his 1967 Chevy, activated the C204 Gravity Distortion Unit in the back seat and began his journey to 1975."Had I purchased this book around 2013 or sooner I think it would have been a more intriguing read.

A fascinating account of John Titor's internet communications about the future, this book provides evidence that he was a time traveler sent back in time to retrieve an early computer necessary to the correction of a major technological problem. You will have to decide for yourself whether it's fact or fiction.

This is an excellent investigation piece. The author does a great job of laying out facts and letting the reader decide what to believe. I've known about the john titor story for a few years and found it to be great entertainment. However the way the author presents and organizes information has made me go from entertainment to hmmmm. I highly recommend this book to people who have always regarded the titor story as just great bit of fiction. It will definitely make you think

Interesting Book

I was thrilled when I stumbled across this book. The John Titor story fascinated me all those years ago. The whole idea of someone coming from the future, or putting on an elaborate hoax to say they did, is a good read whether you believe or not. It's just darn interesting to try and pull the story apart and work out your own truth, which the author openly suggests you do.There are moments in the book where I thought, 'hmm, there you go, that IS suspicious', maybe there is something to this time travel story. I'm completely open to the possibility. However, there are a few problems I have with some of the key points the author uses, and that in itself casts doubt over some of the other points he/she raised that I'm not well versed in. These particular issues are what warranted a middle-of-the-road 3 star rating from me.They are:1) The author speaks a lot about 'reasonable doubt'. I have reasonable doubt that he/she does truly know that much about the concept of reasonable doubt. And I quote ... "This book has shown reasonable doubt that Titor was what he said he was ...". From the author's perspective, he was trying to say that he has proved beyond reasonable doubt that John Titor is a Time Traveler. What he keeps repeating, is that there IS reasonable doubt that he IS a time traveller. A comical error repeatedly made. It disappointed me. As Mulder would say, "I want to believe", but this obvious mistake just really destroyed the whole mood ...2) The author says, "He correctly guessed Man-caused Global Warning was not happening". Umm. WHAT? This point was used as a tick in Titor's favour. However, I think it's very brash to come out with a statement like that, especially as elsewhere in the book the author repeatedly lashes out at the lack of professionalism of debunkers when he says, and I quote again, 'they were absolutely sure of so many things that just weren't so'. Sounds familiar. To support this point, I cite an article from The Guardian (16 May 2013) "Survey finds 97% of climate science papers agree warming IS man made". This is from a base of 12 000 peer-reviewed papers. I'm pretty sure this statistic proves exactly the opposite of what the author was getting at. People may still want to debate the whole climate change thing, but no-one can possibly say that it's been proven that it's not man made definitively ...3)Towards the end of the book, the author examines some ulterior motives as to why Titor would want to hoax. He said that some people thought that Titor was simply a gun-crazed nut, and examined the possibility that this hoax was motivated by this. The author then collated all Titor's references to guns. Personally, whether the guy is a time-traveler or not, I'm actually pretty convinced he was a 2nd amendment enthusiast and did love guns. The author then says, because Titor suggested not to stockpile weapons (when asked on the internet forums) this was excellent proof that Titor didn't have motivation to hoax. I have to say, 'I don't think so'. John Titor actually said, "No (to stockpiling). You will draw a great detail of negative attention to yourself". To me, all that proves is that Titor doesn't recommend stockpiling simply for the reason that it would drawn unwanted attention, and no other reason. And if Titor has a motive about guns, he wouldn't want 'unwanted attention' now, would he?Overall, I have to say, I enjoyed reading this book, even if it was just to debate (with myself) the different points.After reading it, I'm no closer to believing he was an actual time traveler (jury is out). But I did find some of the 'social commentary' enlightening. Interestingly, if he were a time traveler, whose to say that he hasn't got a different motive than is mentioned in this book. He is awfully fond of guns, absolutely dedicated to the constitution as is (including the 2nd amendment) and is dead keen on US civil war. In fact he thinks it would be good for us, (and did I mention that he really doesn't like our generation ...). And, I guess something that he would fight for, given the supposed civil war that should be happening soon (based on 2.5% divergence that it didn't happen in 2005), something in line with the motivation of the civil war being about an infringement and loss of rights of personal freedoms versus the governments perspective that rights need to be infringed for security purposes. That whole bit has played out 'socially' and continues to hover around in the US, particularly since Sandy Hook, about introducing gun laws. And I think without stating it, this is what Titor was about. Which still could mean he's from the future, because he's kind of on the money there, else it is his motivation to stir civil unrest to protect the 2nd amendment. Whatever the truth, I think that guns a big part of his motivation.

Weather or not John Titor is real or not this book makes you at least consider the possibility. I didn't know anything about this subject until I read this book, now I can say maybe.

This book is required for a course in the ECE Department at the University of Texas, and was written by a faculty member who teaches the course. While I've heard great things about his teaching ability, he isn't too skilled at writing textbooks.Looking at the table of contents, you are given the illusion of a semi-decent organizational structure. Once you get into the actual text, the illusion is exposed for what it really is. The book fails to stay on topic and goes off on tangents way too much where a reference to another chapter would suffice. There are many grammatical errors which, while not affecting the information being presented, hurt the professionalism and credibility that a textbook must strive to maintain.In the end, the book serves best as a reference for programming the Freescale 9S12 microcontroller and not as a learning tool, which I think is what it was intended for. Since this is the first edition, hopefully these problems will be acknowledged and corrected.

In addition, with our nation now so deeply in debt to China, I wanted to know more about our new bankers.Silent Tears is a diary of several recent years in the life of an American Christian "ex pat" housewife living in Mainland China. It's a "warts and all" account of her experiences, good, bad and ugly, including her own problems. I was very impressed by the author's efforts. She was sensitive to the possibility that practices which seemed senseless and cruel to her might actually have good reasons behind them, as was sometimes the case, but also willing to persist in efforts to improve matters for the children of the orphanage in their town. By mobilizing donors and other volunteers, she was able to make lasting differences, especially in the lives of particular children.However, there was only so much the orphanage volunteer group could do without causing their Chinese hosts to lose face in ways that might have resulted in payback against the orphanage children. Even now, years later, the town in which the orphanage was located is not named, for fear of retribution against volunteers and children still there.One tidbit that really helped my own understanding was realizing that in Chinese culture, when a wife marries, she leaves her own family and joined her husband's. Thus, the only way a family can be sure of having a child to care for them in old age is by having a son. I still don't approve favoring sons over daughters, but do now better understand the "logic" of it in such a society.This book is must reading for anyone thinking of adopting a child from China, and highly useful reading for anyone planning to visit China. I should be the ideal reader for a book like this. As an adoptive mom of three kids, all Asian (though not Chinese), I am highly sympathetic to the plight of "orphans" around the world (many of whom have living parents who are unable to care for them for a multitude of reasons.) I've visited orphanages in China and India, and I've done quite a bit of reading and speaking about developmental and social outcomes related to early institutionalization. But it's unfortunate: this book's purpose, to raise awareness of the conditions of institutionalized orphans in China, is undermined by the author's persistent and intrusive bias against all things Chinese. China is repeatedly referred to as "this strange land" or "this foreign land"; she (rather casually) states that Chinese men don't respect women; she wonders with annoyance why the serving staff at McDonald's persist in speaking to her in Mandarin; and finally, attempting to support a narrative arc in which she and the Chinese caretakers eventually grow to understand each other,, she concludes that the Chinese "have their own culture, which they've had for hundreds of years." (Hundreds of years, indeed! Those pesky Chinese whippersnappers! Try tens of thousands.)It's more than understandable that Bratt feels angry about the conditions that many children languish in, and she's at her best when confronting the truly appalling neglect and abuse she documents: healthy babies wither into apathetic, developmentally delayed children, while children with extra challenges like cleft palate or blindness fade away and - too often - die in their beds. It sounds as though she and her team of volunteers made some substantial changes in the orphanage, enriching the lives of all the kids, and providing several individual children with life-saving medical and foster care. I truly enjoyed reading the letters included at the end from adoptive parents who ultimately provided a "forever family" to some of the children Bratt knew as a volunteer, and these letters offer a lot of credibility to Bratt's work there. Unfortunately, her anger over the plight of the orphans is too often translated into rather harsh generalizations about Chinese culture and people. Although Bratt says she learned to speak Mandarin, her writing voice is that of a foreigner who fears and loathes what she doesn't understand.

He uncovers a reluctance by the president and the U.S. government to hunt down Abu Kahlif, the global leader of ISIS. The administration's unwillingness to go after him left the U.S. vulnerable to attack, and the reluctance to hunt him down mean J.B. will have to take matters into his own hands.This is Rosenberg's third novel featuring J.B. Collins, a foreign correspondent who covers the Middle East, and who has seen more combat action than most military veterans. As the story opens, Rosenberg is meeting with the president just before the state of the union address, unsuccessfully convincing him to take threats about ISIS more seriously. On this theme, Rosenberg makes several unsubtle jabs at the recently replaced U.S. president.If it weren't such a serious matter, Rosenberg's jabs at Obama would be almost comical. Like Obama, President Taylor calls the terrorist group ISIL instead of the more commonly used ISIS. He avoids linking their religion to their actions. Taylor says, "The Islamic State is neither Islamic nor a state." (This is pretty close to a direct quote from both Obama and Hillary Clinton.) Collins's response: "Such nonsense made my blood boil. "Each entered the U.S. in the past year as part of the president's program to welcome and absorb fifty thousand refugees fleeing ISIS." And in a jab at Obama and Kerry, an Egyptian general says, "and still your president thinks ISIS is less of an existential threat than climate change. How can he dare say such a thing?"But jabs at the Obama administration are not the focus on the book. Collins's connection to Abu Kahlif makes him and his family a target. Despite his status as a journalist and his disagreement with the administration's policies, Collins sets out to hunt down the ISIS leader on his own. Collins has plenty of connections throughout the Middle East and manages to build a team and collect intelligence leads as he hops from country to country.Rosenberg's criticism of U.S. policy takes a back seat to Collins's quest to find Abu Kahlif. Contrary to what you might think, Rosenberg is not anti-Islam. To the contrary, he paints a picture of Muslims, Israelis, and Kurds joining forces to take down ISIS. While ISIS can't be separated from their Islamic theology, Islamic theology can be separated from ISIS's radical interpretations. Any policy that does not recognize the importance of partnering with Muslims in the Middle East will likely fall short of eliminating the terrorist threat of ISIS.Without Warning has some overblown action and melodrama, but hey, it's a novel, right? The major, coordinated attack on the U.S. is not entirely unbelievable. The willingness for U.S. officials to downplay or overlook the threats from immigration and terrorist cells is all too real. Rosenberg's time in the Middle East has given him insights into threats coming from Islam. Mr. Rosenberg is my personal favorite novelist. Certainly of those alive today. I waited a long time to get this book and picked it up the day of its release.When you start reading the book just make sure you're not busy and have a few days to just stay focused on the read. Because you really will have a hard time finding many stopping points where you'll be ok to put it down for a while.I won't give away anything about the book - but the ending will surprise some. Because I know Mr. Rosenberg's style I picked up on the ending target a little early. I enjoyed the read as I always do.The only reason I gave it four stars was I could tell Mr. Rosenberg was getting some pressure to finish the book from his publisher because near the end I felt as though he moved way to quickly. The story seemed to stop suddenly and pick up later and at times it felt a tad "rushed" to finish.But overall I loved the book and will be paitently Mr. Rosenberg's next novel.

Last summer I read First Hostage by Joel Rosenberg. It was an excellent novel about the President of the USA being taken hostage by ISIS. I did not realize at the time it was part of a trilogy. This June I read the other two books of the the series, The Third Target (Book 1) and Without Warning (Book 3). This series focuses on a war correspondent caught up in the violence of the Middle East, specifically ISIS/ISIL. The trilogy is action packed and contains various scenarios of terrorist attacks. The final book, Without Warning, gives a good history of ISIS/ISIL, in Iraq and Syria and their plans for Jordan, and other Middle Eastern countries. It also opens with terrorist attacks on the USA. Included in the final book is the role of Israel, Egypt, UAE, and Turkey in relationship to ISIS/ISIL plans and actions. It does a good job explaining ISIS/ISIL mind set and purpose. There is some religion (Evangelical Christian) dialog, but it is limited to a few pages in the first two books and a bit more in the last book. I would give the series a 4 1/2 out of 5. Action packed with good character development and interesting scenarios (including the use of Sarin gas which was hidden by the Assad regime and found by ISIS/ISIL). Apparently the author is not a fan of the previous USA administration's foreign polices as well, as this does play into plot and is mentioned as being the policy of the series' current fictional president. No sex or profanity in the series, though some terrroist violence. The ending will haunt you....

I have read several comments concerning the absence of problem solutions in reference to this book. It maybe because there are so many options to choose from to solve various problems. I suspect that the cost of extending the book size with answers in the back is not justifiable to keep the price down. A CD would have been nice but they didn't feel this way.I have a B.S. ME degree and have practice my engineering craft for quite some time. I am preparing for Grad-school and further to a Doctorate. An idea I am working with is an App, FX Math solver and FX Calculus solver for iPad. This solver is wonderful. There are others that I use as an adjunc but the FX solvers can shoe either the answer or the step by step solution if you formulate the problem correctly. There are some other good ones so there should not beIn conclusion, I recommend using a math solver for problems in the book that will calculate and plot. There are a number of them out there.

This was by far one of the best engineering books I've ever had. I ended up using this book for much of the semester and thought it was well laid out. I only have positive regards for this book as it helped me get an A in my Thermodynamics class. The tables in the back of the book are quite useful and would be great for any mechanical engineer to take note of, if not keep a copy of the table handy for some future classes. The quality of the authors writing compares to that of my favorite engineering book author Hibbeler.

Industry standard, except I hope schools stop using textbooks that use English units. The rest of the world doesn't use them. Even the ENGLISH don't use them, so why does America still force that nonsense down the throats of its own graduates, engineers and scientists? Let's move on people.

We had to purchase this book for a Thermodynamics 1 course I took. We only used the first 6 chapters in class, but I grew curious and started to read the other chapters.I will start by giving you the pros and cons of this book:PROS:* Clear layout* Tables in the rear of the book are organized and have a clean layout & use different colors to differentiate units (SI first then English units)* Mini examples during the reading to help you understand concepts* Section problems to use newly acquired skills* At the end of each chapter, there is a section that gives you the most important equations in that chapter* Front of the textbook has conversions by subtype (Force, Pressure, Energy, etc...) and in both units* The book offers problems in both SI and English Units* Aesthetically pleasing* It offers Thermodynamics as a science for different types of engineers (Biomed, Environ, etc...) thus aiding them see what it could be useful for & giving us traditional engineering majors a look at how to apply Thermodynamics outside of our realm of expertiseCONS:* The chapters can get long. Like 40-50+ pages long in some cases* Computer methods sometimes occur in the book between concepts. I think it should be reserved at the end of the chapter; not everyone uses those methods* No solutions at the end of the book or in the index* No companion solutions manual* I found that while the textbook reads well, it can sometimes gloss over important concepts so I used the Thermodynamics for Dummies book as a reference* Physically large and heavy (more akin to a tome than a standard textbook)* The person who mentioned it isn't build durably is correct: Mine is starting to show moderate damage in the back cover near the spine.A traditional Thermodynamics class stops short of Exergy (Chapter 7).Chapter 1 is basically a review in Physics/Chemistry: conversions, units, etc...Chapter 2 offers insight into thermometers (types and uses) as well as barometers and their governing equationsChapter 3 begins the 1st Law of ThermodynamicsChapter 4 Begins to talk about non-steady state as well as nozzles, turbines, etc...Chapter 5 starts entropyChapter 6 Irreversibilities generated internally in a system (i.e. more entropy)Chapter 7 (Not used in my class, but read it anyways) Exergy (it goes into using it for economic purposes)Overall, I would say this book is nice. It gives plenty of reason to use it and I will use it long into my career as a reference book. However, it is pretty obvious that it could benefit from a solutions manual or some answers in a special index. In addition, a companion manual would aid the reader and finally, the Dummies book also shows you how it could have been better streamlined.I understand Thermodynamics is a complicated course, but this book's verbosity can really bog down someone trying to read it and short of drilling through problems, there isn't a way to understand the concepts in-depth and as I said, sadly it has no solutions manual.Thank you for reading and good luck! :)

Paid $220 for this book and it came in the worst "box" I've ever seen. Just a folded piece of cardboard taped on some edges. Should have taken a picture of it. You could see the side of the pages of the book without even opening it. No shock dampening material at all. 4/5 because it was surprisingly unharmed.

Firstly, I'll agree with other reviewers that the book has a very clear style and is very helpful learning how to do thermo calculations.Most chapters have a few section on concepts and the rest of the chapter is examples. The examples are very clear and after reading through them I was able to do our assigned problems without any problems.My major issue is with the book's lack of conceptual explanation. It explains concepts in a formulaic fashion. I.e. it gives a formula and explains how to use it and supplies just enough concepts to be able to use the formulas. Take for example chapter 3 where it introduces the first major/complicated concept of the relations between specific volume, T and pressure. All it does is give the graph and than analyzes the graph. Sure it explains very well the relations and how to use them, but there is almost no explanation given as to why they are the way they are.I'll say again, if you want to be able to do the thermo analyzation and calculation this is a really great book. But, if you want understand why things are the way they are, you'll have to find another more theoretical book.

This is a very good text book, it is well written and keeps it short and sweet. It gets to the point. One great feature is that it boxes in derivations that are not nessacary to understand, this way you don't get bogged down in a lot of text. There are tons of examples in the book and no mistakes that I could find. You really can read and understand everything from the text, you don't really need a teacher, which is saying alot, because most books are impossible to read and figure out what's going on. I agree the bio part is worthless, but Moran is obviously into that stuff because he always mentioned it in class. It's really not a bad thing...just skip it, who cares if it's in there. Overall if you want a good thermo book, whether it's self taught or in a class, it's a good choice.
