I tried to use this text to plan an elective debate course for middle school; it was very thorough but ultimately more advanced than what I needed, as I suspected when purchasing. Prior experience and knowledge of debate may be necessary to benefit greatly from this text, as I had not studied debate before and was somewhat unsure of terminology and general knowledge that was assumed for readers.

I am a first-year assistant coach for Lincoln-Douglas debate and Student Congress. I found this book excellent both as a primer as well as for the more advanced strategies of research and rebuttals that it provides. It is a shame that there is no section for Public Forum, but this book does a fantastic job of presenting the kind of information that ALL debaters should know.

I bought this book for teaching a Speech and Debate course for high school students. It can be a bit complicated for them, but overall it does give the students the opportunity to learn about what goes into learning the terms of forensics and most important of all, they learn how to conduct proper research, which for those who are teaching, know its a skill that students lack going into college.

I'm fairly impressed with this book. I haven't used it with students enough to see how well they will take to it, but the contents are inclusive and decently laid out. It's good.

One of better overall debate books out there. Could use an update to include Public Forum Debate. Congress chapters very good. Great bok for beginning debate clas.

This is a typical textbook which made it hard for me to read. But it seems to be written clearly with a lot of detail.

Sad but triumphant story of how a wonderful woman, nurse, mother, and friend emerged from a rather sad, lonely childhood. But once she escaped her father and step-mother there was no stopping her! She became the wonderful mother, nurse, and friend who became a respected and beloved author of "Call the Nurse" and "Come You Here, Nurse." She does a wonderful job of describing the crofters in the Hebrides and the beautiful scenery in the Hebrides.

Enjoyed reading about Mary MacLeod's formative years.

Great to be able to finish the trilogy

Child development specialists, psychologists and everyone associated with children should read this. It gives great insight into the mind of a child and hope for their future. The Island Nurse turned out a superb human being.

Print is too small for me to read. Wasted money.

I enjoyed the book very much. I would certainly wish a more loving childhood for Mary J.. She has a remarkable memory and gives unusual insight into how a child perceives the very adult things going on around her. Her background makes her ability to love and care for others all the more remarkable. The last couple of sections seemed slightly rushed, I would love to know about the years between "Hush" and becoming the Island Nurse, and also her travels later on. That said, I hope any future books will be published in a more friendly format, the 10.5 pt font made it a terrible struggle to read and I would have to stop because of eye fatigue.

I've read most of the biographies on her and consider this one the best by far. It is thorough, sensitive, with many details not found in others. More than well worth the read!

Imagine her bio being written by someone objective, professional, ethical, and who had significant access to Mother and the circle of "helpers" in her astonishing life. Spink is not interested in being sentimental; she is interested in being accurate and keeps any bias she might have to a blessed minimum. Forget the maniacal raving and hysterical shrieking and flopsweat neurosis emanating like toxic waste from sybaritic roué-types like what's-his-name. What *was* his name? Funny, it doesn't seem to endure.The name of Mother Teresa does, however, endure, and this well-written, organized, compact, fact-laden bio certainly delineates the many varied, complex, and breathtakingly simple reasons for that endurance. My recommendation is to buy this along with 'Come Be My Light' -- the collection of Teresa's letters to her spiritual directors published posthumously. Read the bio first for the facts and then delve into the mystery of her spiritual greatness via the letters.

I enjoyed learning from Mother Theresa. What an amazing lady! She did so much with so little and demonstrated the power of a devoted life.

A very well written book about the life and works of a woman that many either don't understand or haven't taken the time to understand. The author does a wonderful job of detailing her life and the very reasons she lived for! One can't help but respect the sacrifices she made for the poorest of the world's poor! I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about one of the greatest women of the 20th Century!

I led a book group discussion of this inspiring biography. I'm not Catholic, but as a Christian and a human being, I was moved to look more for miracles and to serve more by reading about Mother Teresa in this well-written book. Also, I read the previous edition of this book a few years ago and I was pleased an mostly satisfied with the updates addressing criticism and other post-humous info on Mother Teresa, sainthood, etc.

She was an amazing human being. Noble, kind, loving, and really capable woman. She has helped to men and women which were in difficult life situations. Also she helped a lot of small children which others have rejected. Human kind can be proud with people like Mother Teresa.

Spink has created a serious biography of Mother Teresa, which covers her life fairly comprehensively from birth to death. Mother Teresa's creation of the Missionaries of Charity, and her tireless efforts on behalf of the sick, and the poorest of the poor are well illumined by the book. Refraining from much criticism or praise, Spink also illustrates Mother Teresa's uncompromising stand against abortion, divorce and birth control. The style is a bit wandering and digressing (and as always I wish there were footnotes!), but nonetheless relays essential facts of Mother Teresa's life. The book is accessible, and recommended to anyone seriously trying to appreciate her life, in or outside an undergraduate context.

About the Author

Richard Dominguez was born Eufrancio Ricardo Dominguez to Ricardo and Juanita Dominguez in Dallas, Texas on September 22, 1960. The second of seven children, Richard grew up in a section of West Dallas known during the Great Depression as 'The Devil's Back Porch'. Dominguez recalls his first exposure to comic books at the age of six, when he began sneaking in to his Uncle's room to read from his large comic book collections. In high school Richard enrolled in Commercial Art and later took Life Drawing classes at a community college before taking a job at a local supermarket chain to create and paint point-of-purchase displays. During the late '80s and early '90s, Richard worked as an intern for several art and design studios, later designing logos for Semi-Pro Sports teams and small companies.

The content of this Graphic Library series is perfect for ESL/EFL. My students find them very interesting. Unfortunately, the paperbacks in this series do not hold up. Some magazines can last a year under heavy, but careful use. These paperbacks can only be read a handful of times before they fall apart. I'd be willing to shell out a little more for something more durable, but the library binding is too expensive for such a short book.

I am a teacher and my students absolutely love these books! I would give them 5 stars, but they are cheaply made and pages start falling out after only a small amount of use.

Good book on the Transcontinental Railroad for grade school children.

Graphic nonfiction is an excellent way to present history to young readers, much as the Classic Comics of the 1940s and 1950s introduced young readers to literature such as Moby Dick. This particular nonfiction book crowds too much into the story, too fast, concentrating mainly on the crooked (as depicted within the book) businessmen who formed the companies that built the railroads. It touches very briefly on the men who actually dug the earth and laid the tracks -- the Irish and the Chinese. And it touches even less on the Indians through whose lands the railroad went. The story could use more maps to illustrate what was happening, and it could use charts to compare facts about costs, travel, and shipments before and after the building of the transcontinental railroad.

This book uses a comic-book graphic format to tell the history of the transcontinental railroad. Without getting too bogged down in politics or culture issues, it introduces you to some of the personalities and some of the obstacles faced in the construction of the railroad. Presents the building of this railroad as an indisputable good thing.Mini section of notes with good information.

A quick--but not at all superficial--read that gives you the tools and perspective to harness focused urgency in your life. A quote I particularly like: "The use of rational assumptions until they are proven false is a powerful tool to maintain direction and speed toward your objective." This is the kind of thinking that allows you to get into action almost immediately, without waiting for the full picture to take shape (which it almost never will anyway). In a way it's like the advice aspiring writers often get about getting started writing, which seems simplistic but is actually fundamental: start writing. It doesn't matter if you fumble at first--keep going. Only when you get writing/moving will all the latent ideas and possibilities around you start to take solid form so that you can actually grab hold of them. Until then they're just potential--you might be able to sense them but you can't put them to use. Keiper's book is geared toward helping you take those first steps--including doing some initial assessment of a situation--and then, once underway, adjusting course based on the feedback you get once in motion. It talks about making commitments, getting "first-mover advantage," the intuitive aspects of operating with urgency, and more. Keiper doesn't talk down to the reader, and he acknowledges that some readers may be familiar with some of the material here. But really I found the book uniquely inspiring, not only in content but because of the unique way in which Keiper's own passion and voice come through. For me one of the most inspiring things about the book is its motivational quality--you feel like getting to work after reading this, and more importantly you see how easy it can be to get started.

This book does two things that every good book should do. It gives you a fresh perspective and gives you something to talk about!i was fortunate to do a study of this book with with a couple dozen other folks who were leaders, coaches, speakers, and the one thing we all pulled from this book is the relevancy to living our life with a sense of urgency -- proactive urgency - before the storms hit. Living our life with proactive urgency keeps us focused on the goals and when the storms do hit we are already prepared.The book is broken into two major parts. Section one folks on just what proactive urgency is - why it is valuable. Section two takes the book to the next level -- it gets to the how. How we can live our life with pro urgency. I particularly liked the chapter dealiing with fear. That was worth the read alone.Here are just a few William Keiper quotes from the book that resonated with me.- "Choosing to be urgent ... means embracing ourselves as we are now and moving into action."- "Acting with purposeful urgency requires accepting the risks of doing"- "You are already. Just. Go. This is what successful people know and never forget."- "If you want to know your future, the actions you take now will create it."- "The world only moves for you when you act "

The Power of Urgency is a powerful and thought provoking call to action towards getting what you want. I read it, studied it and then used it as a guide as I put my own system in place towards playing "all out" and saw immediate results. The beauty of the The Power of Urgency is that not only does it kick start you into action, but it also serves to help you get unstuck. It does both by providing great insights into the role that fear, inauthenticity, lack of commitment and not dealing with the truth play in our not having what we want. William's Urgency Rule # 17 states, "Proactive Urgency is personal. If pursued with clarity and commitment, it will transform your work, your life and the lives of those around you". In just ten days with this book, I see great evidence of this.

In the wonderful introduction (written by Steve Chandler) to this book he points out that author William Keiper "has caught lightning in a bottle". I couldn't agree more. This book is like riding a rail at 100 miles an hour. You can't stop and you can't get off and you don't want to. I love the whole idea that we have such amazing power that we only use when we are forced to use it in a crisis, but we can turn it around and be proactive. I will think differently about how I go after the things that are important to me. If you are stuck--buy this book. If you read it you can't stay stuck.
