Review
The newest edition is truly better than ever! This book is packed with great, useful information for the beginner and even the expert online teacher. The additions of mobile learning, analytics, and case studies to the 4th edition are exceptional, and the updated glossary and links section makes this a book to keep close at hand for ready reference as you go through the semester. --Ray Schroeder, Director of the UPCEA Center for Online Leadership The 4th Edition of Teaching Online, even more than its predecessors, is invaluable for both novice and experienced online instructors. Online instruction, like teaching itself, has evolved, and so has this indispensable guide. What Teaching Online does best of all is put the emphasis on that first word, teaching, and put everything else at its service. What makes the book exciting is how it shows that teaching online is transformative, opening up possibilities that don’t exist in the traditional classroom, better serving students’ needs and realizing teachers’ goals. --George Otte, University Director of Academic Technology, The City University of New York and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, The CUNY School of Professional Studies

As everyone becomes more and more connected the world gets smaller and many of us are trying to live more efficiently. The popularity of online learning continues to grow, people are discovering that they can earn a degree even though their current circumstances are not conducive to participating in traditional classes and even students attending residential colleges are finding that online courses offer flexibility that helps them complete their degrees in a shorter time period. Instructors/administrators who will be delivering or supporting online courses are fortunate to have “Teaching Online: A Practical Guide†as a reliable, well-marked and regularly updated road map for this new realm.Within the second chapter these authors categorize the different levels of readiness for offering online courses that exist among learning institutions. In a subsequent chapter I was particularly interested in statements that online instructors and instructional designers who were developing courses together made about the division of labor, managing expectations and investigation of example courses. Reading the “Creating an Effective Syllabus†chapter is also highly recommended because it explicates a number of potential problems that can be deftly avoided simply by posting: student participation requirements; academic integrity expectations and the fact that due dates will be calculated based on the instructor’s time zone (or the student’s time zone). This book is so thorough in its coverage of the preliminary tasks and ongoing considerations for teaching online that reading it bolsters my confidence. Whenever I reach an impasse and must make a decision in otherwise uncharted territory I search within “Teaching Online: A Practical Guide†for insight pertaining to: how and when to give attribution for the use of some other person's materials; counseling students online; addressing students’ technical problems; exploring new online learning career opportunities and many other attributes of teaching/learning that are transformed when transferred to the online realm.
When a text delivers its promise then it calls for a five star rating. Ko and Rossen pack Teaching Online A Practical Guide with examples of syllabi, lesson plans and assessments for online courses. Like an effectve web-based technology, the text is intuitive. It makes teaching and learning sense. When Ko and Rossen turn their attention especially to putting the dimensions of an online course into play they address thoroughly each issue of concern. The text accompanied me as I designed and executed my first experience in teaching online, and the pedagogical companionship was and continues to be welcomed. It was uncanny: the guide spoke about initial student resistance to online learning as my students raise their own hesitancy during our orientation classes. Ko and Rossen offered wise counsel about speaking to anxieties with instructional clarity and encouragement. If you are moving toward highly blended or hybrid classes where technological resources genuinely assist learning, then do take this text along as a pedagogical companion.
Perfect for the topic, along with A Guide to Online Course Design by Tina Stavredes. I would recommend them both as they complement each other.
Its a book, it works, it was in great condition, needed it for a class, or I wouldn't have bought it.
Very helpful book.
great reference for my online teaching course
Although some of the contents are our-dated, it still has many useful tips and tricks in the book. The book is very easy to read and guide the readers through all the aspects needed to offer an online course. I like it.
